1952 circuit racer on the way

Hi german lookers

Ive just bought a 1952 split window bug to compete in the UK Aircooled Cup. its going for a welded in cage from der botcheinvolks, a 2366 T4 motor, dry sump, fuel injection, ECU, sparco seats, luke harnesses, lifeline system, plexi windows, impreza calipers and discs, huge wheels and semi slick tyres!

road legal, race log-booked and hopefully a whole load of fun :D

i did a few vwdrc races in the oval so ive got most of the kit lying round, and ive done my full race licence.

i suppose it will be a german look :)

ps
are there any split window circuit racers around?

Wally September 13th 2005 09:29

I really would appreciate a picture or two...

jimby September 13th 2005 09:51

well the car is being delivered tonight to my workshop where the old race oval is so ill get some snaps later. :)

LOAF September 13th 2005 10:03

WOW..

Sure would be interested in seeing the brake set up..

You mention impreza, are we talking subaru 4 pots, Brembos, or single pot impreza calipers..
Being a Scooby guy I have some of these parts laying around.. (single pots) and 4 pots on the car.. so I would not mind seeing what was done to have them mounted as well as how the spindle and hub were made.

Thanks
Alex

rear 2 pot calipers from a WRX, they are nice and light and if a two pot caliper is enough for a lotus elise its enough for a bug in my opinion. no point in fitting brakes that do more than enough, ill only have to carry the extra weight round the circuit. the hubs will have to be custom made and im not sure where the law stands on handbrakes?

piccies, sorry i didn't get time to take photos i had a BBQ to get to :D

Rob September 14th 2005 18:55

Rob.

Sandeep September 15th 2005 11:18

COOOL ! :D

What are you doing for suspension ? Are you using the original bits or going with something different ? IRS/BJ or SWING/LP ?

Thanks

Sandeep

probably going to look for an IRS/balljoint pan. we can then bend the upper arms on the beam to get the extra camber, anti roll bar and extra castor. at the rear going to look at a z-bar and something to limit travel.

wouldn't it be great to just ditch the lot and fabricate double A arms in instead :D

Wally

Is there any Beetle/aircooled racing series in the Netherlands?

Nope, I believe there is only one beetle participating in the Youngtimer trophy...

In Germany however there is the 'boxer Pokal'! : www.boxerpokal.de
Make sure to check that site; sure you'll like it. It has many ex-Kaefer-Cup cars in it :D

Greets,
Walter

Pictures of the '52

He's not lazy. He's just swanning around in Australia.

It was good to meet you James.

I've checked out the German Look forum on your suggestion. I could spend a fair bit of time here.

Does my car classify? http://www.clubvw.org.au/images/pc_may.8.jpg

Bring on photos of the '52

That is a sweet looking car , FullNoise . What can it do , performance-wise?

fullnoise November 21st 2005 05:00

Performance?

It's not a drag car it's a circuit racer with a standard gearbox. Most people can relate to quarter mile times so I'll start by stating that it a 14.9 second quarter mile at the 2004 VW nationals.

I usually race pretty well with Porsche Boxsters. They get me on the longer tracks and I get them on the tighter tracks. If you don't know the tracks the times won't mean anything to you.

I've got a good yarn from my favourite track, Wakefield Park, to share with you. I lined up on the dummy grid and this guy in a Honda S2000 cam up next to me and asked me if he could go in front of me (This is unusual and would probably be considered rude). I let him go through politely but in the back of my mind I thought I won't let this bloke get away.

We got let out in pairs for out timed runs. This Honda pulled about 5 or car lengths on me up the hill and I got him back a little bit through the bends. On about the second lap my tyres heated up and the oil was hot enough to give the engine maximum rpm.

The guy in Honda gained a few lengths on me up the hill but I got right up close to him through the bends. I sat right on his back bumper on the last lap. I really tried to fill up his mirrors as much as I could.

On the second run he came up to me and said "This time you go first and I'll catch you". He said "I'll catch you" not "I'll TRY and catch you". This peeved me off. When we were given the signal to go I actually spun the wheels by accident because I was so revved up. I only had him in my mirror for 2 corners.

On the next run I pulled up in the dummy grid and the guy was well down the order. He wasn't keen for another race. One of the officials came up to me while I was waiting for my run and said "I was looking at buying one of those S2000s but now I don't think I'll spend seventy grand on something that can be beaten by a beetle!".

That's what it's all about and why I keep my beetle looking standard. All the work goes on under the skin.

I race the car with a bloke called Jak Rizzo. We do supersprints and the occasional hillclimb with the Porsche Club of NSW. The Porsche guys are great and regularly compliment how quick and well turned out our cars are.

Sorry for the long post.

Regards

The post wasn't to long, it was not long enough!!!!! Great story. Your car is well beyond classifications!

That post was definitely easy reading.

Re

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Oh and hi Jak, fancy bumping into you here. Jak's got some good stories. In fact, nobody in his neighbourhood will race his beetle at the traffic lights. He's embarrassed quite a fewbig V8 engined Aussie cars. You'd better save that for another post because we don't want to hijack Jimby's post.

Regards

beetlecupdriver November 25th 2005 09:26

Hijack it, James wont care :D

MX67 November 25th 2005 10:44

Just saw the link You gave!

Great story, I like the Poobug nick for the car. Or is it PooSsy2000?!

My compliments Jakriz :D
