Fast & Furious Roofscoop?

Hi all, i was wondering if anyone has ever seen a bug with one of those fast and furious scoops like the Eclipse had mounted onto the roof? Also what are your thoughts on something like that?

libila January 7th 2006 05:10

I think it's lame that your getting ideas for your thirty year old car from a new-age ricer flick, but that's just me.

Do you want the roof scoop to be functional?

siromega January 7th 2006 05:17

I stated Fast & Furious, as most people are familiar with that movie but NOT FIA World Rally cars.

I would prefer the scoop to be functional (I am a huge Rally fan, and as such have seen practically ALL rally cars have them installed) and would like to somehow have it route down to the rear through some filters or something (have you seen the late model Lotus Exige with the split window and roof scoop?) something like that.

libila January 7th 2006 05:44

Where are you wanting to place it? What function do you want it to serve?

The roof vents you see on WRC cars are for cabin airflow, AKA air conditioning.

Have a search on here for pics of judgie's hill climb car...

siromega January 7th 2006 07:45

Thanks Ricola, I found the pics of Judgie's hillclimber, looks like one bad bug. and that scoop is something like i want only a little more modern looking. I would like it to serve a purpose like perhaps for additonal engine cooling?

beat me to it :D
scoop is functional and was the only way i could get some fresh air into the car.fixed perspex windows and all holes in the dash filled for the msa tech regs.still needs some holes putting in the rear screen to let air out.
cheers rob

I personally wouldn't do it.

if you want it for engine cooling, then side vents would be more practical

+1

There is no point in putting a scoop on the roof for an intake/engine cooling. Let me find a picture of the Jeffery's race car.

libila January 7th 2006 21:44

Here it is, the J/Sport race car. Notice the large scoop behind the rear side window? That's what you want.

siromega January 8th 2006 07:28

WOW thats neat!! Thanks for posting that pic (its my new wallpaper)!! :D

libila January 8th 2006 13:58

Sure thing. Here is J/sport's web site- http://www.ne.jp/asahi/jeffreys/vw/

You're going to need to use Babblefish unless you already know Japanese.

Do what you want to do, not what others think is 'cool'.
If we all thought that way we we all drive the same car.

Rob.

uless it is going to be functional which i doubt, i wouldnt bother adding more weight to your roof, which s the worst place to add weight as it raises your center of gravity.

roof scoops tend to look cheap and nasty, stay well clear.

mine IS functional. and a bit of plastic weighs less than steel.
cheers rob

roof scoop

I would suggest taking a note from NASCAR for this one and only instance. I have purchased some vents/scoops from Racer's Wholesale Parts and some aircraft grade airduct. If you don't worry about having rear passengers, you can mount the vents to lexan rear side windows ( NASCAR connection they use them for driver cooling also I think). The vents are then run back to the firewall where you attach the duct work to either a dryer type sheet metal reciever or you can get build your own intake pieces from Autozone for cleaner looking though similar reciever. The most drastic piece of body alteration will be cutting and sealing your firewall. This is the way I plan to get more ventilation. When I no longer need my car for work I will put this kit together. You could feasibly rig up some sort of sweet ram air deal from the engine side of the firewall with fiberglass or carbon fiber carb ducts. Just a thought. If I can be of more help, let me know. I have tons of great ideas and no money, lol. V3

link to site

Here is the link to the site for the NACA ducts available in black or clear lexan the ducting is listed under ducting and is about 37.00 USD for a 10 ft length the ducts are between 16.00 and 20.00 USD and are available in several different configurations http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/index.html

VWader04 February 5th 2006 16:34

I have seen people who mount there external oil cooler by the package tray and the transmission. Some NACA ducts directed to cutouts in the package tray might deliver more air flow in that situation. Either from the windows or a hood mounted scoop.

I actually like the look of the hood scoop on the UniRoyal racecars. If some one is doing a full racelook and could use the scoop for practical reasons, like directing air to an oil cooler or maybe to feed fresh air to the cooling fan or something like that.

But I guess it would have to fit in with the overall "style" of the car.

Noncompusmentis February 11th 2006 14:02

there is a guy in the UK that drives an oval with a air intake on the roof of his bug. Think that serves only as an air flow for the cabin too. Looks pretty cool to me

Quik February 19th 2006 21:53

what about something like this?

http://img478.imageshack.us/img478/6...intake25lz.jpg

http://img478.imageshack.us/img478/1...orcarbs7cq.jpg

obviously since this is an oval, you'd hafta do it a lil differently, but that seems like a functional r00f sc00p that's more subtle...

V.waffe 3 February 20th 2006 11:37

That is freakin' slick my man.

Quik February 20th 2006 22:43

I'm just curious as to whether or not any rain ever makes it up in there... cause h20 in the carbs = bad...

bigwigracecars February 23rd 2006 12:39

That car will never see the rain, unless it's being towed on the trailer back from a race. It's strictly a drag car. I built the roof tunnel about 8 years ago on that one. I think he's finally about to finish it up and hit the track later this year.

Quik February 23rd 2006 20:48

awesome job man... (hope you don't mind me borrowing your pics and l00kin' at 'em every night wishfully :P) - I saw that bug a couple years ago on your site, glad to hear he's almost done.

I love that dash you did on James Gaubert's pro-stock oval... I wouldn't mind havin' that in fiberglass so I could paint to match :agree: :agree:

That is awesome indeed.
