My oval...
Thought I would post a few pics. Started this project in late September. Lots of work has been done, lots still left to do!! One person working sure takes some time
Anyways, brief history of the car, my dad bought it in 1981. It was totally stock 36/crashbox ect... He gave it to me for my birthday when I turned 15, we spent about a year and a half "updating". Well finally in December of 1992, I was behind the wheel!! Well two weeks later a Chevy 2 ton pick-up pulled out right in front of me.....Well, needless to say I will always remember Dec 21,1992!! Since then (a body shop did fix the crash damage) the car sat in a storage unit for about 5 years, once I moved into my house it has sat in the garage since then. I figured might as well start the project over again.... Its not perfect, but its mine!! Sorry for the long post, here are a some pics...... Later IZ Here it was getting rolled outside after a LONG hibernation... http://members.cox.net/baker5/bug%201%20unstripped.jpg I have tons of pics of the last few months, but Ill spare you all!!! This was a few weekends ago.... http://members.cox.net/baker5/full%20seats%202.jpg http://members.cox.net/baker5/seats%201.jpg Painting has finally begun!! http://members.cox.net/baker5/green%20cage.jpg |

It is a good kit, great customer service as well!! |
Nice cage
That's a nice, safe looking cage. I'd like side intrusion bars too but I'd probably have a bar that goes under the dash. What inspired you to put that in? Wait, let me guess... a 2 ton Chevy?
Is the cage attached to the body at waist level or rain gutter level? Do the rear bars support the chassis forks? I have a 6 point alloy bolt in cage in my oval is a bolt-in. I'm sure it would only stop the roof collapsing in a rollover but you can see the front bars flex and vibrate over bumps. How much did all the bars weigh? Your car looks hot just with the cage and the seats. CYA CT |
Hey thanks for the reply!!!
I figured since 92, cars/trucks have grown rather large, so yeah I guess you could say personal safety was the motivating force!!! :) The hoop isnt attached to the body other than at the bottom plate/boxes... Same with the door bars, they tie to the mounting box/pan as well. The downtubes do in fact tie into the frame horns....As for weight, Im not sure, it is steel, so it is pretty heavy, I would guess maybe 100-150lbs total??? Not for sure though.... Thanks again, IZ |
could you show more pictures of the roll cage? particularly the front and top? I'm looking into one from autoweld chassis but this one looks pretty good too. i'm looking into chromoly but if this one's signifigantly cheaper shipping i may go with it.
thanks james PS.. it really looks great, i love the car and it's an inspiration for my project! :) :) :) :) that really is what i need right now and it's working! woo! laters |
Bear with me, these are old pics......Thanks for the kind words!! Let me know if you need any help with anything.

is the cage welded to both the body and the pan?
|
ohh... i was expecting a 10 point cage.
it looks like it is welded to the body and pan... i wonder what would be the best way to not do that ...run 2 or 3 bolts through the plate that connects to the pan? it probably wouldn't be as stiff then though. it's pretty crowded looking back there, maybe it will change once the intereior's done. I'm thinking i want to do that but instead of run those 2 big bars the the frame horns i could add another lower cross bar to connect them. less obstruction in the rear view mirror and maybe stronger too i really like this car how it's coming though, it's one of my favorite projects on the internet. very clean and almost perfectionist in a way, like building a hot rod. I also really really like Racelook's project. I can really relate that to mine |

It is only an eight point, I felt a ten would be a bit overkill for my car..... Quote:
I am way to harsh/critical on myself....I need to remember it will never be perfect!! This car has seen too much crap in its 50 years to ever be perfect...... Later IZ |
...there's no such thing as perfect, there're lots of things that are second to none. As far as i can tell, the way it's coming along is beautifully. i wish my car was that clean cut. I have so much rust and so little space. the frame and everythign else of my car is outside under a tarp while my body is on cinder blocks in my garage. boxes are packed with parts all over the place and i can hardly move. It's the winter, it's near impossible to compare parts between the body and pan. you have it going, I can't wait untill i get the halves back together, then it's pretty much bolt on from there for me.
did you split the body and frame? I'm doing mine with completely inadequate tools or space. ...sorry for all the rambling but thoughts are flowing, this is kind of funny. so when i split my body and frame i basically undid all the bolts and everything, pushed the car outside (by the way, i have a super beetle so when everythign was apart there was nothing to hold my suspension striaght up and steer, it was a mess) so i tried gettign the body off and after enough work the whole body rolled over on it's side in my driveway, smasehd the mirror and dented the whole driver side door. ...has my heart ever skipped a beat like that.... alright you;re probably running out of patience. do you have any more pictures of your car? i love pictures, i'm sure most everyone else likes to actually see how things are coming too laters |
Hey, I didnt seperate mine. Rust was very minimal. The heater chanels in the rear needed about 6" on each side....Other than that, those were the large areas of concern.
I know what you mean about small work space....At work our building is about 100x150 pretty big. Coming home to work here I am stuck in a single car garage....It is pretty tough. I did put up one of those 10x20 canvas shed things with a concrete slab. So that makes it handy to get the non-essential items from the garage. Now that I am into the paint stages, my spare bedroom (the cats room!!) has been taken over by me for painted car parts..... Sorry to hear about the body misfortune....I dont think any project comes without some sort of hardship.... One picture to hold you over...( Yes, I do have tons of pictures of this thing) Later IZ http://members.cox.net/baker5/b&W.jpg I dont know why this wont come up??? BTW: you can watch this thread if you want. I have a few pics in it as well http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1488465 |
