Finaly worked on my car

2 Attachment(s)
The black car finaly got it's turn on the lift. Cup brace is welded in. Bilstiens are ordered for the rear. Adjustable spring plates and JayCee's spring plate covers on the way too. The type 1 2275 is out along with the transaxle.I have acumulated lots of goodies for the car but have had no time to install any of it. I even ordered dual 3 inch NACA duct goodies for both rear quarter windows (like Herbie X). I hope the front spoiler/bumper (Porsche RSR look) is done soon as the RX7 oil cooler is going to the front bumper. The 2275 might have a new home, will know next week for sure.

Panelfantastic February 1st 2008 21:21

Poor step child, doesn't get any love anymore! Always wrenchin' on somebody else's stuff. :bawling:

wrenchnride247 February 1st 2008 21:51

It must feel good to finally work on YOUR ride. (I still have other people in front of mine own stuff) Soon soon you'll be looking like this :D :D :D when your done with upgrades!

vujade February 2nd 2008 10:21

very cool Dave. Cant wait to see the bumper/spoiler :)

yetibone February 2nd 2008 20:16

Yep, my car's been lonely in the corner of the garage many times before. Currently, I can't remember a weekend in the last two months that I haven't spent working on it. :)

About the Bilsteins, I think mine would work better with larger torsion bars. Right now, I'm re-indexing the stock torsion bars back to their original position to get the rear up off the bump-stops. That will take some of the jolt out of bumps to the rear. I'm not sure the stock torsion bars have enough strength to work against the shock's valving when indexed so low.

super vw February 2nd 2008 23:07

I cut my bump stops down to about 1"... solved the harsh hit, and there is still plenty of safety margin. Im about 2 inches from touching the stops at rest. Im also using the bilsteins w/26mm torsion bars.

yetibone February 3rd 2008 09:01

Yes, my bumpstops are half as long as the stock ones. What it feels like is an incongruency in spring rate, and valving. I hope that going up one spline on the inside will increase the spring rate, as well as the operating range.

super vw February 3rd 2008 11:54

re-indexing torsion bars will not raise your spring rate, but it will make your car sit higher at rest. Yes it also makes you have a larger operating range if you raise your car.

yetibone February 3rd 2008 17:36

Whop, you're right. :o Let me re-phrase my statement to say that I've indexed my stock torsion bars to use up the available spring rate before hitting the bump-stops.

...something like that. :lmao:

super vw February 3rd 2008 23:32

I didnt think you where that silly ;)
The resson Im saying anything is that a local guy who does a few auto-x events in a 73 standard re-indexed his rear bars and pre loaded them against the spring plate down stops... he said he was trying to "raise the spring rate" so the body would not sway/roll in turns. But all this really did was make his car super high in the back and very stupid looking. Although he did make some decent times that day, about 4 sec off my thmes ( but this is like a lifetime in solo times)

The brown truck stopped by the shop today as I was bending up the fuel line to feed the new Type 4. I got the carb access panel holes cut and panels made today and hung the fuel line.

oasis February 7th 2008 16:44

Congrats, Dave. Glad to see you having fun with your own. :)

Here are a few for you Carbon Fiber junkies.
How about a subwoofer enclosure and new rear seat delete panel made from carbon 1/2 inch fiber/honeycomb sheet goods. Stonger than plywood, lighter than .040 aluminum. Don't ask me if I can get more of this stuff, our aircraft overhauls have been farmed out. But you can get it through Boeing for about $10,000 per 4'x12' sheet.
Bilstiens and new front sway bar are in too.

iamstumper February 14th 2008 14:01

OK, the rear seat delete is just cruel

Have to admit I like the way the back seat area is looking .... What about coming up with a template that folks can use and supply their own materials? Either that or I'm just going to have to break down and send my car to you and see what we can come up with :D

Looking great and can't wait to see more updates!

NO_H2O February 14th 2008 20:00

I'm sure I can trace it out on poster board for you.

.

Come to think of it, I know a guy. His job is to repair plane parts. Always talking about leftover carbon fiber bits. Never heard him mention any honeycomb though. Says they keep it all frozen? and it's date coded, after a certain date, they throw it out!?
The real kicker is, he's a car guy. Makes stuff for planes all day, but just cant seem to make the jump to building his own stuff. I guess without a plan and a mold he's lost?
I'll ask about honeycomb the next time we chat.

Panelfantastic February 17th 2008 09:52

Hey Dave, still don't think the black car will be done for DD?

yellow73 February 18th 2008 01:17

Dave,

The upgrades look great. I am glad to hear about you working on Smack - I can't wait to see it - looks great so far.

NO_H2O February 18th 2008 22:52

I will not have my exhaust before Dyno Day. But there might be a loaner that will work to get it on the roller.

Panelfantastic February 19th 2008 14:50

YES!!

I paid a guy just this morning to work for me, soooo, looks like I get to make DD also. Pretty excited even if I'll only be a JAFO. Sounding like the place will be packed.

I cut another carbon fiber peice to cover the spare tire with battery relocated to a mount in the center of the spare sticking thru the carbon fiber cover. Looks sweet. My new CSP shifter came today. I was feeling good until I read Dennis's post about his electric fire. I am deflated now. But I use his post as motivation to go to Summit and buy a 250 amp battery disconnect switch and a 5 lbs. fire bottle so I will have 2 fire extinguishers in the car. I will soon install an on board fire system like the one we put in Herbie X. The kit is about $400 but I think it will be money well spent. Non the less his post has me very sad. I know he loved that car.

Well I finished the firewall, fabbed the rear 1/4 windows with NACA duct inlets, installed the battery diconnect, switches to control relays for fuel pmp and ingnition system, finished the Batery relocate less the 4 hold-downs for the carbon fiber/honeycomb spare tire cover. I made a carbon fiber dash plate for the battery disconnect switch and a carbon fiber wire cover for the front side of the gauges. I still need to wire up the HyFire and make some stainless inlet screens for the NACA ducts and install the new CSP shifter. I hope my heads are done soon so I can finish the engine up.

Gratuitous use of c/f. I love it. I was hoping to see it today. but it's not in the cards for me. should be able to next week though.

I got the NACA duct stuff from Butlerbuilt. I made a template from the original glass and cut them out of Lexan with a router. Made the stainless screens and secured everything with "T"bolt clamps from Summit.

Scotts73SB March 4th 2008 00:12

The front trunk is a museum piece! Great work!

bow March 5th 2008 15:17

cool thanks i am gonna do that on my car

Inching forward

I am fighting my way forward on my 2.4L type 4 build. I had to spend more time than normal to fit many parts and spent more time than normal waiting for parts but it is moving forward.
I had a few days off and fitted my DTM. I ended up having to mill near 1/8 inch off the bottom of the alternator stand to get the alternator to sit true and the fan/backing plate to sit properly in the opening. Now I need to get the linkage built. I have one set of center pull linkage but I have had problems with this brand in the past so I am going to try a different center pull rather than use a crossbar set up.
Anyway here is what is in it.
GA case
DPR 82mm crank
96mm KB piston/Bored OE cylinders
CB H beam rods
Web 119/163 cam w/Jakes lifters
Manton push rods
Porsche 2L heads worked by Len Hoffman (all the tricks in his bag)
Mallory Unilight dizzy w/6LA Hyfire and E-coil
45mm Dellorto DRLA's (for now)
Kennedy Flywheel (12 lb.), Press plate and disc
Home Built Exhaust (not shown)

I built an engine run stand to break it in on.

you would be in business now if that low life who has your dizzy would get off his a$$ and send it to you. seriously i should be up and around a bit tomorrow i will shoot it by ups. should only be a couple days for the ole brown devil. thanks for letting me borrow it (publicly). look closely in the box for an envelope with some green stuff in it.

Rest up Laz. I know my dizzy is in good hands. You needed to use it after what happened to yours. Glad I could find you another at the swap meet.
I am waiting on a linkage set so sit on a bag of frozen peas, take a pain killer and rest up.

Lazarus October 21st 2009 22:59

ive been sitting on these peas for so long now im waiting on them to hatch, who knows what will come out if they do hatch. i got to get up for a while. three days is enough.
