Car wanted!

Greetings all--

Wanted 1975, 1974 or 1973 1303 (in that order). Hoping to get a car in time to do a few mods before the SBO! 15th anni down in Irvine. My only requirements are drivable and no more than surface rust. Paint color doesn't matter, and badly faded paint is ok too. I don't have a lot to spend on a car...$2k to $2.5K, but less is better. I already have a set of 16 inch Porsche wheels to go on it, and to fit up the Porsche wheels I need to convert to 5 on 130, so I've already planned to do that...therefore, brakes/tires/ and wheels are not critical. Basically, a solid, sound car. Oh, and I'm in Cali. Not opposed to a sound car from anywhere, but I'd have to be able to get it here at a reasonable cost, so in state is preferred.

Thanks!

Search is over. Found a running, structurally sound '74. Drove it 60 miles to get it home and it drove nice. Drove through heavy rain on SPENT wipers, which wasn't fun, but I stopped at an auto parts place and picked up a set and solved the issue. Pretty happy right now!

Superman might be able to post the pic I sent to him. I honestly don't know how to go from phone to online. One way or another I'll get some posted soon.

What did you end up spending and how bad is the rust?

I spent $1800, the car runs well, and the rust is minimal. It appears to have had the usual rust down the rear window vents but was repaired. I intend to do a better repair job, but for now, the perforations are closed up.

The worst two issues with the car are the front seats and the poor quality paint job. The seats had covers, which, when removed, revealed large holes in the seats. They're still functional, but need replacing. The paint job must have been cheap, or the body wasn't prepped right...it's bubbling up in many many places. Thankfully, the bubbling is NOT caused by rust. I sanded the paint down to metal at several of the bubbling spots and found clean metal underneath.

In preparation for SuperBeetle Only's 15 year anniversary (at the VW Classic, in Irvine, CA on June 8th), I will prep the body and spay the car with Tan or Grey Plasti Dip...right now, it's baby blue. I've always loved the understated look of factory tan VWs. Tan Plasti dip isn't quite the right color, but it'll do.
