hello mate
no damage to cylinder or rockers[thank god it took about 12 hours to lighten and polish them]pushrods are also all right, titanium spring cap did not get of so lightly though and has a keeper jammed in the center!
still we can rebuild.
cheers rob

Well glad to hear it wasn't as bad as it could have been. How long will it take you to get it back together.

judgie November 21st 2004 14:29

that all depends on how busy my engine builder is[stateside tuning]and how much it's going to cost me,before the end of the year i hope, ready for the new season.

Triple check that rod and crank for straightness!

what brand were the valves???

Wally November 26th 2004 09:40

Oh man, and to think that those were one of the nicest done heads I had seen ever!
Actually amazing how little damage has been done.
How did this happen? Any 'clues'? Do you run a head temp gauge?
This was cylinder 1 right? Usually one of the coolest running ones...

BTW, do you know why you have a 5th stud on the top side? IF you would do a 5th stud, between the bottom row would seem more logical, as the bottom head studs are the ones that are longer, so they expand more and would easier loose compression that way at the underside (also the exhaust side to make things worse)...

Thanks for sharing.

Regards,
Walter

valve float and not enough deck hieght!buzzed the engine to about 7500rpm with about 2mm deck hieght.lucky i was changing gear when it went so no load on engine and as soon as i heard it let go i hit the kill switch.crank and rod are perfect just goes to show how strong typ4 stuff is.
head is off to be welded tomorrow so should have it back to be remachined and checked by the end of next week, just got to decide weather to go for stronger springs or limit revs to 7000rpm[220lb installed]and what retianers to use?think the valves era trw stianless but would like to try some titanium ones if i had deeper pockets.

just a update on this.engine all back together and run in.did a few mod,s as we put it back together, heads now have 47cc chambers[was 52cc]80thou pockets in new je pistons, bit more spring pressure and titanium retianers.cr has gone up to 10.3 from 9.2.pulls much better from low revs and revs like crazy.below 4krpm people think it's a subaru impreza and above 4krpm think it's a bike.
2 pics of how the car looks know, allmost ready to race.
