how do you keep motivated

well just trying to get some ideas.

i've completly lost my motivation to work on my super (the engine is sitting in the basement half assembled)

i just can't seem to get myself motivated to work on it. :banghead:

the cars out back waiting to have the engine put back in. it's insured and licensed, but it's like i've lost interest.

super vw June 8th 2004 00:59

Well, do you want to drive it.... theres some motivation right there :D

Hmm. maybe download some sick videos of hot dubs ripping up the tarmac!
That always gets me stoked!

Rob June 8th 2004 07:50

What gets me motivated is watching shows like monster garage, american hotrod, etc., and when I look through magazines....that always keeps me going.....

Sometimes you need a rest though, just leave it for a couple months.....it will come back to you....

Good luck.

Rob.

I miss driving my 1302 a lot. That's been keeping me going. Right now I don't even have a place to work on it so I'm forced into a temporary break from the action. Seeing PanelFan's bus and the other members get their projects on the road helps me keep motivated as well.

see other projects and car shows usually gets me going. even magazines can help. not the porn type though.

undecided June 25th 2004 04:05

you know what keeps me going? CARBON FIBER. sure i get distracted easily, and get too busy with work and assorted art projects, but one glimpse of anything carbon fiber, and BOOM!

volksdragon June 25th 2004 16:39

i wish i could afford carbon

Bill K. June 26th 2004 02:38

Just do something. Set a small goal and do it. Build on simple accomplishments. Spend at least 15 minutes every day. If your not in the mood, just sit in the drivers seat and wine. Enjoy what your doing or find something else.

Bugs are life,
Bill

lack of motivation...

I seem to be having a lack of motivation lately. It's not exaclty like I have a project sitting in the drive, with no drive to work on it. I have no project to work on. I currently own a '72 standard, but I have no intention of building a standard GL. My sights are set on an early 60's Ghia with an IRS pan. If by some chance I find a great deal on a '73-up super, I'll build that project instead. Basicly, my problem is I have an urge to build a project but there is no project to build. I have parts, money, time, but no project. I recently had to hide the parts in my room, because looking at them kept giving me that same feeling, like I'm not really going anywhere towards a project. If I had a garage I would simply hide them there, but I'm not that lucky. I personaly don't like doing nothing, it's almost like wasting time you might say. I was involved in a project of my friend's '51 split recently, it wasn't my project but I still had a sence of pride of setting a goal and meeting that goal. Also, seeing the other GL projects on this site moving along further gives me the feeling of getting no where, but I'm sure they would motivate if I was started already.... I believe that's all for now. Sorry for the extra long post.

Any thoughts, personal feelings, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Mike

Sorry for the complaining like this but I've been wanting to get that out for sometime. My girlfriend likes Volkswagens, but she wouldn't understand.

Well not everybodies projects move along at the same pace as others. I worked at a pretty fast pace when I decided I was going to restore my car but after a few monthe I became overwhelmed with options and the project pretty much sat still for at least a year. Then I started going the GL route but still had no Iidea what I was doing so it still took forever to get anything done. Then at last years (2003) bug jam I met the guys from the VKG and it all started to make sence. They directed me to these forums and with there help and the help of others my project is getting done. If you can't find your perfect car just wait a little and it will come along. In the mean time maybe start collecting engine parts as good deals become available, that way when you get the car you can drop in the go to get you to the show...

volksdragon July 27th 2004 22:49

yeah i think all my motivation was sucked out through my wallet when i bought a house.
i have a motor half assembled in the base ment needing to be finished so it can be returned to the rear of my bug.
i have the parts to put it back together but there's always a million other things that get in the way....
the other thing was that i had a type 4 to build for the car but money being tight i couldn't afford the swap as the motor was a dud

i dunno i see the car every morning and every evening sitting nice and low in the weeds and i just feel like a neglectful father

oasis July 28th 2004 09:08

Okay, volksdragon, this has been going on for almost two months now.

Now hear this: YOU WILL DEDICATE AT LEAST ONE HOUR PER WEEK PUTTING YOUR CAR BACK TOGETHER. SCHEDULE IT NOW. I SAID NOW! YES, I Was shouting....

Once it's together, you will drive it. Regularly.

In the meantime, set up a budget. NOW. Every pay period, you will donate a given amount regardless how small to an envelope for this project and this project alone. This amount is a fixed minimum. You may donate more but once it is donated it cannot be used for anything else.

If, once you start driving, you do not have the motivation returning to you, you will identify what it is you do want and you will proceed from there.

Finally, you will file weekly reports here as to your progress no matter how small. No need to tell us how much is in your envelope if you don't want to since it is not really any of our business.

This is dr. oasis at your service.

Just picture in your mind, the look of shock on the face of the guy in the first pimped out Honda Civic you will lay the smack down on. Most of that crowd has no idea what a VW(air-cooled) can do.

yetibone July 28th 2004 12:42

I'm about as unmotivated as I can be right now.

I work on cars, trucks, farm tractors, and road tractors all day. When I'm off work at 6:00pm, I don't want to work on anymore cars, even if they're mine.

My engine bulid-up has ceased because I'm STILL waiting on some important parts. I have so much still to do to the car, and pan, but I need the engine out of the way first.

The Passat fiasco set me back ($$) drasticly, so that makes it even worse.

:bawling: Sorry about that folks, but I'm afraid the carrot's gone for me too.

boygenius July 28th 2004 21:52

I go for a ride on my bike to get me motovated. All the looks I get and the people trying to race me gets my blood pumping. I want all of those things to happen when I'm driving my bug. If I could only get my beetle to go as fast as my bike...

yetibone July 28th 2004 22:28

I hear ya. :agree:

Riding makes me relax and unwind, but still maintain physical motion. I feel tired, but it's a good kind of tired :D .

Mabye I need to hit the road and find some trails somewhere,.. I gotta fix my flat front tire, and change the oil first. Bought a tire and tube 2 years ago, and haven't gotten around to putting 'em on. Got the flat the last time I really rode off somewhere in February.

boygenius July 28th 2004 22:41

Fix that flat and change the oil man. I put my entire bike together in 3 hours, and it was totaled... ;)

Eric Happy Meal August 2nd 2004 15:06

you wanna be motivated? go get yourself some CRAPPY *** beater car, just one that doesnt require any money but is STILL a peice. i suggest a vw fox. dont change ANYTHING on the car at all. use it as your daily driver when your bug isnt running. pretty soon youll be itching to get your project done just so you can stop driving that crappy *** car.

volksdragon August 5th 2004 12:38

well i've gotten some motivation.
had some work done on the motor so i can assemble it.
i think it's just a matter of no funds and crazy work stress.
i just needed some time to relax and driving driving my stock mk3 cl  made me miss my bug :D

This should be everybody's motivation. I know its mine. A beetle is all I have ever driven. I CANNOT wait to light em up on POS Civic. I'm gonna toy with em! I had a Mustang GT pull up on the side of me the other nite, wanting to race. Its a ****** 70hp bug you moron that cost 1/5th your car and is 20+years older!!!!!!!
But one day, they are gonna be embarrassed and garage their car in shame... :agree:

thats why we named our bug betty
cause every time we'd pull up to a light the joker in the next car starts revving his engine.
and i turn to my wife and say "bet he (betty) wants to race.

I love whooping up on hondas. I love beating any ricer, but hondas are just ten times more fun. I took the turbo off of the car for a spell, I dont think the clutch liked all the power, so now they have something of a chance, i should have it back on the car soon, and then its over.. Again. I might even swap out to my spare motor and put this one up for a rebuild when i do the clutch. Hmm.. I think yall just gave me another project to work on..

Kataplun October 24th 2004 00:19

my motivation y my own lola :P each time i see that car i just get all thease crazy ideas, other motivation are watching herbie the love bug, looking at some c/f parts from joes site, and some sick vedios from CSP's website

petevw October 25th 2004 02:18

i have my toys sitting in the garage. i find just opening the big door gets me giddy

if i walk by it, it seems its no big deal. just a afterthought. BUT, crack open a beer, walk outside, open the double door, and i get silly (i'll take a pic soon) and usually do something for a couple hours.

-> have a stereo in the garage. backround music make things go quickly, with less fustration.

super vw October 25th 2004 02:39

I kinda get that same way to, i have my beetle and my bus end to end in our garage and if i go in there to do somthing (even non car related) i usualy end up working on some little item of one of the cars.

Right now im not having to much of a problem getting motiveated, i recently started working at a shop that deals with restoring and working on german cars (mainly early 911's and 356's, some other makes and models to) and every day when i go in i get all amped up... its like going to a car show every day :D i love it! after seeing other project geting done and worked on, it makes me want to go home (or do stuff in the shop) and work on my super.

one other thing to get things moving for me is to just order parts so you have somthing to do. but for me, that can prove to be dificult as i dont have a lot of money to spend.

Keep on keepin on! done give up... never stand down!
