installing side scoops?

I've got a standard bug with a Suby EJ20TT engine that's ready to be repainted after restoration in a few weeks.

I'm in doubt as to buy carbon fiber side scoops or not ( I used plexi NACA air ducts in the rear side window to cool the IC).

My question is: can I install these side scoops after the car is repainted (cut a hole in the rear quarter and glue the scoops over the painted surface), or what is the correct procedure to install these scoops?

Hi Tom,

From my opinion and from what i've seen you should definatelly install the scoops before the painting, finalize and find the desirable spot for you,cut it in the right position and have all the benefits gives you an unpaint car.

A friend of mine have made a similar installation as yours(suby engine + side scoops) and he paint them in the same color with the car, which is totally beautifull.

Personally, I would probably cut the holes in the panels before paint, then bond them on afterwards with panel adhesive. I'd be worried about the scoops flexing with weight on them and cracking a join (which would have had to be filled and then look very ugly). By doing the holes before paint you will have nicely painted edges...
I guess a lot depends on the quality of the scoops...

Found a good way to install them in this thread:

I ordered a pair of carbon fiber scoops, hopefully I'll have them and install them soon.

The scoops arrived today and I had some free time so here goes...

Made a cardboard tempate for the cutout

Some measuring was recuired, then cut it out and use a special plier to make the edge of the sheet metal where the scoop goes over come in a little deeper so the scoop is flush with the body

Hi

There is an interesting build on a Subi bug here http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/v...d=67295&page=1

Its 16 pages long so the good Subi stuff is towards the end. Hes going to use water 2 air IC, makes sense in a rear engine car, but is a little more complicated.

Steve
