Bodywork question.
I have just about finished welding in my custom firewall and was wondering what I should use to fill in the little gaps where the two pieces of metal were joined. Can I get the same stuff that VW used to seal there welds. If not what then.

You can stitch weld it ( a little here, a little there so you dont warp it, then grind it smoth. Or go the an auto body supply and buy some seam sealer.

I'll try the seam sealer since it already looks like frankenstien with the zillion spot welds on it. Thanks very much.:D

:whoops:
I set my car on fire welding the fire wall in. Luckily I looked up and saw the orange fire coming in through the pop-out window mounting holes. I shut off the welder and used some compressed air to blow the fire out and them some water for good measure. I think I'll call it a night. ;) |
Were was your fire extinguisher.
Don't feel too bad. I was clearancing my case for the 2275 in my shop last week, very carefull to clean up the dust and chips from the case and workbench but forgot all the dust on my shirt, hit the stud insert with a sanding disc on my 90 grinder, shot sparks on my shirt and had a small magnesium fire on my chest  . So much for that shirt. |
 Thats not good.
I set my hand on fire once with methonal, It was just like the indy cars you could only see the heat distorsion. :o |
I did it again. This time I set the left side of the car on fire. When am I going to learn. :o |
seam sealer
boygenius, have you used the seam sealer yet?
If not then I have a tip to keep it looking factory, Before you start sealing, run a peice of masking tape either side of your welds about an inch apart, apply the sealer either by brush or sealer gun, after 10 mins or so use a small paint brush soaked in thinners to smooth out the sealer making it look factory. Small just starting fire's you easily can "put them down" with your CO2 welder.. just pull the "trigger" and the CO2 will stop the fire.
Wiebrand  |
I couldn't get to the fire. The space between the outer and inner body panels was on fire.
I want the fire wall to be completely sealed against exhaust fumes. When I get most of the welds done I will pick up some seam sealer. |
