Hey , here's an interesting thought . Has anybody seen or thought about doing a GL older 356 Porsche . I was on thesamba.com classified ads , and saw some 356 shells that might make good candidates for something like this . I was thinking a big type IV engine with a 5-speed , lowered with 4 wheel discs and big rims . Any takers?

i'll take one! going free, yes? really would love to play about with one of them, thou not much you can do with the shape, they soooooooooo smooth n sexy already! prob have to stick with 16" maybe 17" wheels. wouldn't it be cool to have the body made with carbon outer lay up too? ooh ooh i wanna, i wanna.

Those are so awesome ! thats exactly what I was thinking of . I wish it was an original idea of mine , but at least there are some cool GL Porsches out there (I guess Porsche would be the original GL right from the factory)!!!! Those are all replicas , aren't they?

I am doing this very thing here in Thailand, and just sending my flared Speedster body out to get a mould made so that I can make a Kevlar one. No experience here in carbon but it would be nice if I could get an experienced subcontractor to do the work.
Am now looking into a 356 coupe roof mould so that I can make my wife a coupe or maybe a coupe like removable hardtop if I can figure out how.

All the bits are in hand now and once I move the end of the month construction begins:
Modified Rorty tube frame with Beetle rear engined design so that I can use the VW registration. Would go mid engine but registration is impossible.
A-arm front suspension and rack and pinion steering
Coil over suspension
Suby 2 liter, single turbo, J spec engine x 240 Hp
996 brakes all round
944 narrow aluminium rear trailing arms
915 LSD gearbox with Kennedy adapter
17" turbo twist wheels
Drivetrain shifted forward 75 mm to reduce polar moment of inertia

Labour here is pretty cheap and I may be in a positon to export glass or kevlar bodies in about 6 months. No idea on cost as of yet

Interestingly, those cars aren't sold as porsche replicas, but sa PGO's. PGO seems to be a french manufacturer of old style sports cars.

It's obvious, however, that they are porsche replicas. BTW they seem to be powered by a mild peugeot engine. And there's also antoher model, which seems to be a modernized version of a speedster.

It had reached as far as I wanted to go with it and I got bored, it's more about the building for me!

Yeah, it's the same for all of us I think...but I don't know...if I had to sell my bug now....no way. but let's do it in this way in the future: you build a great car (for example your actual one) and if you got bored, call me up, and I'll find a place for it in my garage :D ;)

I see you have a suby in that - how hard was it to keep it cool without anything that resembles a grill on the front for a rad? Is it in the rear , or is it up front ? I am curious , because that engine is one I am really tempted to use in an upcoming project ( not sure what - maybe a 356!!only time will tell ).Very cool car!!!

The radiator was up front and it cooled OK, although it could have been better. I am helping a friend build another similar car and the radiator will be improved, his car will be black and we will be slimming down the lower centre section of the front bumper and spending a lot of time on a smooth flowing scoop. You should hardly notice it at all, if you look carefully the silver PGO car has something similar in the pic above.

Ricola - checked out the pics - not bad . I have to admit , all the pics so far have been speedster replicas . I have found 356 coupe shells for not too bad of prices (original porsches) , and more than likely thats what I'll end up using . I prefer the metal body over fiberglass . I was originally going to do a super cabrio , but now I'm very much leaning towards a 356 , still thinking a suby engine and all the other GL goodies!
