Jeff-

LOL! I hope nothing, but for example the exaust tips lie only about an inch away from the start of the fender beading on the rear fenders, then again I guess the fiberglass could go up in flames too!!!

Thanks for the comments guys, hope to have it more complete and get some better pictures taken this weekend.

Hi

This car just keeps looking better & better.

What colour blue is that Golf? Paint code & car model would be helpful.

Steve

Humble June 18th 2010 19:27

damn that came out nice. I need to head up there again and see it in person, or maybe convince you to drive it down to santa cruz :)

volkdent June 22nd 2010 18:49

Steve, it's supposed to be Jazz Blue, VW paint code LW5Z, but as you can see my wheels don't look the same as the golf. I can only figure that the finish must be different, under the lighting conditions it looks ALOT different, or those added to some photoshop coloration. The color is pretty chamelion, but I've not seen that glow that the golf in the picture has, and what I wanted. I had bought my wife a purse that is the color I wanted and the color of the golf, but they couldn't duplicate it, the color would have to be custom built and could not just be mixed from existing colors apparently.

Santa Cruz is looking good with all the road shows you've been showing, I'll have to see if a cruise that way is in the cards. If not, your always welcomed back up here!

More pics already taken just not loaded up yet, so stay tuned. The front end is turning out really well.

Hi

I thought your camera didn't catch the colour properly.

I keep changing my mind about what colour to paint my car.

When I fancy a colour I get some paint mixed up and paint an engine lid to see if I can live with that colour.

So far I have painted engine lids, black, orange, Apple green, silver, purple and now I will try to find a colour like the one on the Golf.

Hi

I just realized that Phat73VW bug is painted Jazz blue.

Is Jazz blue a metallic?

Steve

volkdent June 23rd 2010 14:37

There are 2 VW Jazz Blues, one was on a 90's golf, but lacked the pearlescent component, and the one I have is the 20th Anniversary Edition Golf 1.8t color in which they added the pearl effect. I think Phat73s will probably be the same as my wheels.

Jason

Wally June 23rd 2010 16:55

Car does look bonkers! Well done indeed.
I had a Jazz blue Golf4 and was always under the impression that a nineties 911 Cup and the first Audi A4 RS Avants (with the cup1 wheels) had the same colour option.

volkdent June 23rd 2010 17:21

I think you're right, while searching for the color code I read a few comments on the Audis as well.

Jason

dub_crazee June 24th 2010 16:04

looks awesome - great job!

volkdent June 29th 2010 23:56

Another shot, I keep waiting till sundown so I get this golden color and the wheels look dark, but I'll get some sunny ones soon.

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/697176.jpg

Just some random shots as it comes together, unfortunately it also has to come apart as I found that there was some stain coming through on the paint so fenders need to be repainted!!!

Thanks man, I have access so I think I'm going to put some nyloc SS nuts on the inside, then put some epoxy over them to lock them onto the door skin and not have to deal with getting back to hold them later. Clean the surface up and grease the bolt should allow for the bolt to come out of the epoxy but the nut to stayed glued to the inside of the door. Thanks for the insight and suggestions guys, it will save me trouble down the road.

It's been awhile, but I think I got them from the hardware store for tractor stuff, honestly can't remember though. They fit perfectly, so maybe I got them from a VW supplier? Look at the various venders, I bet someones got them.

Hi

Beetle dipsticks work as well, 40 hp ones are the best as they have a smaller handle, of course you need to shorten one leg.

I've used the hardware store type and they scratch paint on the outer edge of the hinge.

Very clean looking. Can't wait to see some video.

Jadewombat July 8th 2010 09:44

Just looking at your side mirror, I was wondering if anyone makes a cool looking set of mirrors that thread into the stock hole? I know there are quite a few sport bike mirrors to choose from, don't really want to drill more holes if I don't have too.

Hi

Sorry about the thread hijack.

On my old 1302 I cut the stock mirrors down to just a stalk drilled and taped the stalk and bolted modified Ford mirrors to the stalk.

No worries Steve, thanks for sharing, I think thats a great idea. Any closeups of the mirror?

Hi Jason

I've sold the car, but I kept the mirror stalks. I've attached another photo of my old car with the mirrors, they were used on local Ford Falcons (same model Falcon that Mel Gibson drove in Mad Max/Road Warrior) down here in the 70s, they had section on them that I cut off and glassed over where they bolted to the door.

The orange mirror is random mirror I found on eBay to show how they look with attaching section still attached.

The two black mirrors are the sort I'm going to be using on my new car, again from an old local Falcon.

Steve

volkdent July 10th 2010 12:07

Very cool, I think a lot of late model bugs could use the idea! Have you posted these in a separate "Mirror Mounting" post in body? Might be nice, those looking probably won't see it in here!

Jason

Steve C July 10th 2010 19:23

Hi Jason

Good idea, I will repost it. The great thing about is you can change mirror styles without drilling more holes.

Looking good Jay. Coming together nicely. I like your LED idea for the turn signals. I'm still trying to figure out a slick way to do mine before I get it painted.

Just thought I throw in a few pics of the roof spoiler, it's really well done and Joe really came through.

Done any more Jason? I can't wait to see the LED light's in and working!

volkdent September 28th 2010 20:28

Not a smidge, I've had a non-productive summer except for the paint, some purchases, and the engine compartment fabrication.

I really got slowed down after the paint didn't turn out, it really took the wind out of my sails to put a lot of time in putting things back together only to find out I had to pull it all apart again.

Just the week after the paint was done I had a 5 hour sinus surgery at UCSF. It has really helped me a lot but took a lot out of me from the general anesthetic and healing combined with another post-op sinus infection. Then travelling, got sick, now it's 105 today! I think this weekend might be the back to work weekend.

The next bottleneck is that before I get it repainted I want to get the roll cage done, and before I get that done I need to fabricate some connectors that allow the rollcage to actually bolt to the front suspension subframe. That's on me, so once I fabricate those I can bug the roll cage guy to take on my project, then as soon as that's done the painter is ready to repaint, and blah blah blah, the project moves on!

I heard that in adult life having your tonsils removed can turn nasty. Luckily I had mine removed when I was 9 or something.

NO_H2O October 4th 2010 08:02

As you get older, everything is a b1tch.
