Type 1 Hp Hop Up.

Ok here is the situation. I have two dp 1600 engines. They are both in not running condition. I think between the both of them that I have enough parts to build an engine for my car. I am going to buy all the special tools to assemble the engine.

I am on a tight budget since I want a big type 4 engine but would like to drive my car in the mean time.

I am planning on doing a little head porting, not to much but just enough to clean the ports up.

What are some good ways to get more HP out of a 1600 without bigger cylinders or stroking it.

I already have .
1. 1.5 quart deep oil sump.
2. high lift valve covers for ratio rockers.
3. crankcase breather system.
4. high rev valve springs.
5. racing valve guides
6. aluminum crank pulley
7. bosch 009 distributor
9. pertonix igniter
10. merged header with J tubes and a high flow muffler.
11. external oil cooler with electric fan

Also any suggestions on a good compression ratio. I have to be able to run more than 7.5:1.

Any information would be helpfull. Thank you.

Don't go to high on the comprestion with a stock cam, it will not be able to get rid of the heat. I am having that problem now (high head temps).

What if I use an aftermarket camshaft. One designed for more power. I was thinking 8.5:1:confused:

That would work with the right shaft.

Hey, Brendan, why not use the Nitrous you have :silly:
If you haven't sold it yet, that should push the ponies up a bit, and you don't have to bore out the cyls. LOL

I'm doing what your doing... putting a 1600, till the T4 is more a reality.

with a higher cr your going to need to invest more money at the start, like new pistons and rings, at least. HI cr will obviously rais temps, so why used tired stock pistons. Plus if you do go higher you, like mentioned, will need a new cam, like an engle 100, or spend a little more and go with the Webcam equivilent.

I'm going with an SVDA dizzy, from ac.net, with dual 40idfs, big carbs for a 1600, but built down to suit. Anyway, the svda, has vac advance, which practically eliminates hesitation from idle, a common problem with the 009.

Build it for realistic driving situations. If you see yourself in a lot of traffic, or drive long distances often, keep it stock cr, you want this motor to last till that T4 is ready right!!!???

I bought german pistons/cylinders, new stock heads (de burred, mild port and polish, matched intakes) had the case tapped for full-flow, just looking for a good used c/w crank and need to get a cam, svda, etc....

any way, just my thoughts...

If I used the nitrous I would be lucky to find my pistons and cylinders on the side of the road. LOL. I starts off at a 75 HP shot. Thats more than my engine will make.;)

Sorry Boygenius, can I borrow your thread? I am planning to rebuild my basically stock 1600cc T1 engine for road racing. How should I squeeze most hp out from it? What heads, cam, c.r., exhaust, etc should I use? I have a pair of Kadrons though. Can I retain the Kadrons by changing the venturi and jets for good hp?

Thanks
Tim

There are some things you can do that will transfer over to your big T4

Weber or dells with 34 vents (change the vents later for the T4)
Mallory dist

Dont be afraid of the big carbs. when you go to one barrell per cylinder it makes all the difference in the world. I had 28 vents in my Kadrons and had less on the low end then I had with the Dells. On the Top end the big carbs will never be the limitation with a stockish engine even with a bit more cam. Remember though, you can use the carbs on the T4 but NOT the manifolds.

Another point of interest, The stock heads, and the heater box exhaust limit you to 80-90 HP, but that is quite an improvement :)

I think to make the needed changes to get more power than that from a 1600 is going to also necessitate strengthening and ballancing

LOL!

It's ok Brendan, I understand, just a suggestion though. LOL!

If I were you, I wouldn't spend too much on the 1600, if your trying to save up for the t-IV. Try doing what a lot of those Honda guys do and change the intake and exhaust, wouldn't be much of an improvement, but it should help a little...
Good luck, I might do the same thing you're doin....when I'm ready:D

When should I cal you?

Well I do have a sneaky pete nitrous system. Hmmmmmmm.

I'm pretty sure all I need at this point is a cam with lifters, rebuilt carb, and some gaskets and seals. I was thinking of running a straight cut cam gear set and drilling the crank for eight dowel pins instead of four. ;)
