Break bias with NA 944 rears
 

Hi guys, I wanted to get some opinion of the brake bias i might be in for with my setup - I have a 71 super beetle with ghia disks up front, and i just got some early NA 944 disks for the rear. It has a stock master cylinder - should this be a good setup? Theres a lot of people doing crazy brake conversions on here, hopefully someone can help a brake conversion newbie! :)

I ran that setup on my old speedster while I sorted out the 944 NA front brakes, wish I hadn't have bothered with the final step as it was better balanced with the bug discs up front. I'm guessing the speedster was more rear heavy though and I didn't ride the brakes too hard, fade on the front would be a problem relative to the rear if you drove it hard.

got mine on and the backs lock up before the fronts, but right now i have the super beetle master cylinder. 944 MC should be in the mail soon enough though

In that case if I were you I'd leave the master cylinder alone and fit a proportioning valve in the rear line..

since i already have the stuff coming my way, what effect will using the stepped MC have on brakes? the 944 one is 23/19, so the 23mm bore will push more than the 19 correct?

More volume yes, but less pressure which is what matters (as long as the calipers get enough fluid).

So with regular ghia breaks up front and NA 944 rears, if I use a 944 MC should the 23 bore be hooked up to the front or the rear to increase front break bias, since my rears lock up first right now with the s. beetle MC.

On a side note, anyone know how big the ghia caliper bore is off hand?

All Beetle callipers have 40 mm pistons, early & late type 3 have 42 mm pistons.

i'm going to hijack this thread as no one is listening on mine :)

so.... if I fit 944NA on the back of my oval, then a simple ghia disc and caliper set up up front would work best???

I have the 944NA fronts, but it seems as if they will not work. too much power.

I don't want to get into bigger calipers the rear, as I need to run 15" wheels. I am assuming of course that 944NA will work with 15" rims????

I see the drop spindles advertised for king and link beams with disc fitting, so do these just allow me to bolt up standard (drilled for 5x130) 66- discs and calipers?

What I've figured after doing some calculations is that the ghia front and 944 rear setup like I've got is good, but just a hair rear biased so next time I come home from college I'm going to research the proportioning valve so I can reduce the rear just enough to make it perfect. I have no experience with the front conversion and I don't imagine I will in the near future because I would only go turbo for those badass looking calipers. Good luck sir !!
