I don't know the exact details as I am at work away from my references but there was a curved-screen standard Beetle made for the South African market for a few years ... around 1976 or so. Oddly, I think it was called a Super Beetle or a Super Bug in that market even though it was not a Super in the 1302/1303-strutted sense.

It may be cheaper to locate one and have it imported. Best of all (I would think), it would be RHD.

I can find out more details if you like.

hey there guys,

havent had the funds to try out my fender idea yet. also i cant remember exactly which members ride that was. i was just looking through the memberrides section and happened to stumble upon it. but it does look pretty rigid to me. ive been welding for only about two years now, and i really dont see the difficulty being through the roof on this type of project. about the track of the car being an issue, i could hardly see why. these types of things have always been modified on custom cars. if you do everything right the first time then you wont have to bite your nails later. thats how i see it. i think that any change in the tracking might affect handling in the turns but if you know how to do a proper alignment and understand the concepts of caster, camber and toe-in/out then you shouldnt have any probs. and you can always expiriment with these things after the work has been done. i just believe that if a full-on fiberglass tube chassis car can be made to ride like a stock vw then this shouldnt be very hard.

after looking at my options i decided that i might try to first see if i can do all the work simply by grafting pieces of the standard fender onto the super fender that are different. this being the sloping part towards the bottom front. i think i might have to widen the standard front apron to fit.
