Bringing the Beetles electronics into this century

I'm installing a couple gauges in my 1970 Beetle, and while I was messing around with the fusebox, I decided that a late-model type fuse box (with the blade-type fuses) would be much nicer.

Has anybody done this before ?
I did a bit of 'research' at the local Canadian Tire  , and it seems that the modern fuses do not come in 8 and 16 Amps.

Could I replace them with a lower amperage ? Or would they blow out all the time ?
Don't want to go with a much higher amperage, because I am not a fan of burning Beetles :D

Any hints, tips or wisecracks ?

Rob.

You can get 10 and 15 amp fuses in that style. Close enough.

Granted there is no magic about a different style fuse box. They all work the same.

Good luck,

Rob,

At Canadian Tire, you can get a pack of the 'European' fuses, 6 pack I think, for like $2.

I bought a whole bunch of 8 and 16 amp fuses.

In the future, I'm going to re wire my car. Having problems right now with shorts in the wire that I can't find ..

I'd like a fuse box of some sort that I could place in a better location that was more accessable.

Painless wiring makes a fuse panel/wiring kit for VWs. One of the magazines did an article on it a few months ago. I think it sells for $200 or so but give you a modern electrical system.

Watsons streetworks carries a kit for it too they have an ad in Hot VW's or in VWtrends

I added a blade type fuse box to the stock system. I paid about $20 for it. I powered the box from the terminal on the stock fuse box on the uphill side of the fuse that has the fattest wire going to it from the ignition switch. The new fuse box enabled me to add new electrical and clean up some of the stock wiring reducing the mess of existing wires crammed into the stock fuse box.

It seems to work fine and not overload the wore from the ignition switch. BTW it is not tapped into the actual ingiton for the starter motor, just the keyed switch (2nd position).
