What are yalls day jobs??
 

I'm 33,3 acvws,1 xwife,1 fiancee,4 kids.I have been doing concrete work for the past 12to13 years.I really hat my job and was wondering if i'm the only one that cant deal well with their choice of jobs.I want to know what yall do to put food on the table and support your acvw addiction.I babysit grown adults all day and the next morning have to retrain them the same thing they did the day before(they get 8or9 hundred a week).Some of you awswered this post in other forums but feel free to answer again for those who don't frequent the other forums....Donald

I work for a company making bulk animal feed lorries and trailers, which involves loads of welding, fabrication and machine work. so this job is perfect for me as i can do all of my own welding wether it be steel, ally or stainless. plus i have access to loads of materials and equipment. if you want to see who i work for look at this address. www.priden.co.uk

Gutters,cool job.I have been fabricating parts,modifing parts for years.My x wife has my garage so my welder,lathe,bodywork tools(went to college for paint and body work),and my 57dragvw,46willys Jeep (mud racer)are at my dads shop.It's a couple of hours away but it works out because he has a couple of lathes,2 milling machines,and any thing one might need when fabricating or modifing parts.He builds racing Harley for the measured mile(kind of like Bonniville)top speed over a measured mile.Here is a link to some pics of just some of my toys and a link to dads(Neon Don) Harley racing site too.....Donald..

I'm one of the older in the crowd, almost 48. I've spent the past 26 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Spent most of my time fixing ships/boats, anything with more than one moving part was my responsibility, gas engines, diesel engines (big and small), gas turbines, pumps, a/c, boilers, gear boxes. One of my guys once said, "he can fix anything but a broken heart"! Now I fix "People Problems", machinery is easier.... I picked up a few other skills over the years like: bodywork/painting, wiring, welding (gas, mig, tig, stick), basic lathe work and probably a few others I can't remember right now (that age thing...).

2 more years until I retire and need a "real job". It has been a hell of a ride though.

The original post asked if others can't deal well with their chosen profession... For the most part mine has been ok, I've had to work with and for jerks a few times but in my job either I move on or they do so it doesn't last too long. There is a down side to that, my kids don't really have roots, my wife resents not having a career and I missed a lot of my girls growing up time (ships don't sit at the pier much). The upside is: my kids are more mature than their peer group because of the wide variety of things they have seen and done (more than a lot of adults) and they are still young.

It is rare for someone to find a job they love and pays well enough to support a family.... there are a lucky few out there, the rest of us must make some compromises....

27, no wife, no kids, pet Monitor Lizard, ex Navy now I'm a R&D Tech/ Field Service Eng. for a company that uses pulsed UV to disinfect/decontaminate water. There are time that I hate it but I am glad to have a tech job with the current crappy job market. This job doesn't help my VW addiction to much except for bring in some money.

36. married for 13 years, two kids. i am an IT architect for a very large company. have to say i love it. they are pushing me back into management though and we will have to see whether i can still say i love it in a while. i have found that more times than not, my happiness in a job is a driect reflection of my immediate supervisors. if they suck, the job usually does too. and visa versa. i was a retail manager for many years before getting back to computers. at least computers only do what you tell them to. :D

35, married 15 years, 1 girl, 1 boy, 13 and 7 respectively. 4 years in the Air Force. (1989-1993) Was trained as an Engineering Asst. (basically, I draft what the Engineer dreams up) and was able to carry on the same work as a "civillian" but now the job is called "Drafting Technician." You'd think I went to ITT Technical Institute for that title.

I have been working at the dump now for 10 years as a Drafting Tech. I like my job, get paid well, but don't love it.

I like this one. nice to see what your fellow vw buddies do all day.


21, no wife, no g/f, no kids, oh and right now, NO CAR!!!!!!!!! (soon very very soon....) and I'm a gardener, 30+ hours a week. I cut yards, trim hedges, etc...yea....exciting :silly: Boss is pretty cool, i actually rent out his front house, (he lives in the back house) so its kinida weird, but way cool, (and CHEAP!!). I just can't stand the DIRT BOOGERS!!! AHHH!!!!

Anyway, i'm also a full time student (12 units/semester) over at Pasadena City College. I'm taking a Television Operations class, a really basic (prerequsite) computer class, and for fun, a beginning acting class. It's all good stuff, (nice to be back in school...NEVER thought I would say that!!), except I don't know what I really WANT to do. Of course my dream would be to get good, and do what JAKE RABY does (specialize in T4s), but on the west coast (AWESOME!!!) or race cars for a living, LOL!! Just recently I've thought about getting into aircraft engines and such, to support my nasty habit, seems like it could pay well. Anyway, I really don't where I'm going...but life isn't about getting "there" its all about making the trek, right!?!?!

Its good to see what most of you do most of the week when you're day dreaming about working on your VW!

I'm 30 with a wife and a 4month old daughter. Currently working as a civilian mechanical engineer for the US Navy for the past 7 years predicting and evaluating ship and submarine performance www.dt.navy.mil

Its interesting work - I get to go out on the newest ships and subs to instrument them and "see what she'll do". All the while, the job makes me a jack of all trades - a lot of project/people management, setting up networks, designing and installing instrumentation, machine work, technical writing, etc.

However, I've decided that my true passion is in the automotive field - anybody got any leads on engineering positions in the automotive field (preferably a company that needs a German speaking engineer)? If you do, PM me!

26, married, baby girl coming in a month. Union electrician L.U 98 in Philadelphia. Love my job, but I think I would rather work on cars. Dog, Iguana. 4 VW's and an Audi on the way. In progress: '74 Super 2276 EFI Turbo and '83 Rabbit GTI. GTI's almost finished. You name it, its been replaced. Used to have an '84, but got t-boned a few mos. ago, and decided to build another, but better. Basically I have a "new" Rabbit without the car payment. :D

I'm a mechanic at a small independent garage. I mostly work on automobiles, and light trucks, but we will take in most anything.

I've worked on a Puch moped, and a John Deere 7020 4WD in the same week!

42% of our clientelle own vehicles with over 100,000 miles. I think I should change my job title from "Mechanic/Shop Foreman"
to "Garbage Technician":D

Hi, their i see some of you guy's are in the field i want to get into ( computer's ). Well i am 31, not married yet, girlfriend of 2 year's she's cool, one 1972 beetle with 1835cc engine soon to be 2270 or 2316cc type . Currently doing my A+ certification in computers so that i can get on to doing what i realy want to do, games designing. One crazy mixed bread dog as a pet ( spot ). Hey can any of you guy's tell me how to break into the games industry. Oh buy the way my job isn't that bad it's in telecoms.

I'm 32 married with a baby due any day now! I work as an IT director for a messaging company in Sydney, Australia with lots of travel to South East Asia (good for those Japanese shows). My wife is interested in VW's too and owns a 1500S Notch. She bought me a 58 356A for my 30th birthday! Life doesn't get better than that!

I'm 37 although my wife says that I act like I'm 10. Married, and I have two wonderful boys ages 6 and 7. I spent 11 years in the Navy as a Aviation Maintenance Administration Man (1986-1997). I now sale factory new and surplus aircraft parts to the DOD, and foreign militaries (www.aarcorp.com). I have three VW's, a 56, and 63 beetle, and a 1974 Ghia. My wife is very understanding of my addiction, she loves animals and has three dogs, and three cats. I think it's a fair trade off!

neil as well! 34 had more vws than is safe for one person too own in a lifetime and never any other marke of car married with daughter 8yr son 12weeks my day jod is british military armoured recon joined in 1989 just as we moved from cold war to close war ive had a few ups and downs in my job a lot of them are not repeatable here! fully intend to finish my full 22 yr contract and retire out here in germany the uk is just to rough these days!
presently own a passat vr6 and a 66 sqr that i seem to have got stuck on i cant see me ever selling it to be honest i figure if i get bored with it i just reincarnate it if you follow me.

Right now I cant afford to go to school, but will one day (soon I hope, dont want my girlfriend to have to work as much), I work as the manager of the produce department at the local grocery store...just don't call me "fruity" ok. I like the job but I don't love it, it doesn't pay enough money for my hobbies.
