'65 bus GL prahjekt

Hey all, guess its time i show what im workin on....:D

its a 1965 "EZ Camper" going GL.

Heres the plan...
Power will be supplied by a torque monster 1915cc that my buddy is building. Specs on that later.
Full exterior repaint in the original velvet green.
'83 944 vented discs front and rear, with a 944 MC as well.
17" Porsche turbo twists 7" front 9" rear.
4" narrow beam and drop spindles from wagenswest and a steering box raise.
IRS conversion rear along with a narrowed torsion housing to fit those 9" wheels.
Built type 1 trans from AZ transaxle.
Safari windows from Wolfgang.
And i will be fixing the "jersey look" fenders also. Stay tuned for that.

Heres some pics of the bus:

This how she looked when i found her.

Looking nice. That should be a nice ride.

hotsauce September 11th 2010 21:35

Thanks guys, i cant wait to drive this beast!!!!

Cant work on it this weekend though, had to yank the engine out of my daily to figger out why its burning oil. booooo.

Hebster52 November 6th 2010 08:19

Looking great! You wouldn't have any How-to info on the LED taillight conversion? I would appreciate some info about that. ;)

DORIGTT November 6th 2010 12:29

How much did you have to narrow the IRS to get the wheels to tuck properly?

Basically i figured out how much room i had to play with inside the lens area, then found some "trailer" LED lights and retro-fitted them. A little cutting and fitting and they dont look half bad IMO....

i narrowed it 3" total. 1.5" per side. Heres a how to link:

http://vwrepublic.com/forums/index.php?topic=22.0

edit. Just re-read your question and realised i didnt answer properly. i didnt narrow the IRS, i narrowed the bus torsion to bug specs, and then it was a bolt on operation, except for having to recess the IRS pivots into the bus frame horns.

hotsauce November 8th 2010 21:06

Oh yeah, update. Got the brakes sorted and bled today. The pushrod needs adjusted because there is a bit of freeplay in the pedal....type 1 engine is also getting the top end freshened so i can drive it while i build the monster type 4.

MX67 November 11th 2010 06:52

Cool GL T1.

Will be watching this :)

@ Hebster: You can use this, simple and cheap, I've tried similar, works fine! I had them on my 1967 for two years, much better visibility :D

So since getting new tires, i've gone and decided to tub the front end, because it was too close to the tires and i was afraid theyd rub once the bus is full of interior.

So we went ahead and cut em out!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2..._7429671_n.jpg

and since we are tubbing the wheel wells 2" the seat rails need to come up and this was how it was decided to do it...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2..._3526458_n.jpg

Got done raising all the seat brackets...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...8_715366_n.jpg

this piece started out flat... kinda made a break/jig to get it this way...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...07_92655_n.jpg

here it is tacked in place

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2..._1866632_n.jpg

the whole front tacked into place after making a few more "fun" pieces...

decided to change a few things around on top so it lines up better...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2..._1361367_n.jpg

pretty much it for the pass side... still have a lot of finishing work to do...

Love keeping the metal looking stock. The flip flops gotta go while welding though (if it was me)

Heh, thats my buddy in the flippies. He never takes them off unless he's riding his Harley.

Oh... Yeah, I cant ride my Harley in "flippies" either... mines a kick start only 93 inch shovel head. :D

hotsauce June 8th 2011 20:32

So, not much to report other than i now understand why people use trailer fenders when tubbing their buses. Its a ****load of work to make it look proper. We did manage to cut out the original rear hoop/brace and add our own frame brace. Now we are going to be working on the repositioning of the shock mounts for the rear. The picture im posting doesnt show the 3/16" brace that we made between the framehorns, but i assure you there is one there now.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...8_266211_n.jpg

ive also decided on a color scheme for this project. It will be the original Velvet Green on the top, and Porsche slate gray metallic from the beltline down. Let me know what you think.

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2139835_n.jpg

im gonna be working on this again this sunday, so more pics to follow.

Luismj June 10th 2011 08:56

No photoshoped.... Bodyshopped!! :lmao:

Clatter June 13th 2011 19:23

You're going to run add-on rear 'skirts' like in the picture,
or run factory rear wheel openings?

Seems like after taking all of the trouble to tub the rear,
you would want to put the rear flares back to stock.

And avoid the "Jersey look" cut rear wheelwells...:D

JMHO...

What im doing to the rear openings is filling them in so it looks 'stock' but using Dzus fasteners so they are removeable. Thats the only way that id be able to get the gigantic wheels out of there. i didnt cut the wheel arch out, that was done by a PO . . . .

hotsauce August 30th 2011 00:41

Update: since doing the front wheel tubs, I've had to notch the frame for the tie rods as it sits a good 1.5" lower. I've also picked up a T3 turbo for it. Can't wait till it cools down so I can get back out there.

Don't know why people would do that, some PO hacked my arches too. Had stock ones put back on as the bus is being painted. I'm running 16" MB CLK rims on mine, bus IRS swap with 2500lb. airbags in the rear. Clearance is pretty close on mine but what I do is jack the bus way up, pump up the bags a little which drops the arm down, and remove the wheel by rotating the lower part of the rim to the center of the bus until the top outer edge of the tire clears the apron then pull the whole thing out (hope this makes sense). It's tight but I am able to get it out. The face of the rim is exposed to the ground when you're doing this though.

That's how I had to take the stock wheels off my double cab. I figured I'd take advantage of it already being cut since I'd never do that myself.....

hotsauce October 17th 2011 00:16

Front tie rod notches are done. Going to start fabbing the Turbo header tomorrow. Any advice from you Turbo pros?

Panelfantastic October 17th 2011 10:30

Ahhh... the memories. From tubbing my bus to having to remove the bolt from bottom coilover mount to get the wheel off. Good Times!

Your project is really coming together!

Jeff=

hotsauce October 19th 2011 22:49

Thanks Jeff! I know what you mean about getting the wheels outta there. That's why I'm leaving the rear cut.....

hotsauce December 27th 2011 20:50

So......... it seems I've forgotten to mention this, but I Have acquired a Turbo for this project. In light of this I have decided to upgrade my trans and sold the type 1 IRS box. Now I'm on the lookout for a Porsche trans. If you know of anything, let me know please! Also, since I'm looking for said trans, I've also decided to use the aluminum arms I originally bought for this project and move the IRS pivot brackets inboard. This will require cutting out out the framehorns and 'hoop' I put in and fabbing a front and rear mount for the drivetrain. No biggie, its just metal right?

TSAF December 30th 2011 04:48

Your bus will be a sweet ride. You might want to consider this kit:

In England these guys have gained a lot of respect.

Holy **** that's awesome! However It probably wouldn't work on my bus as I raised the steering box...... and at £790, that's pretty pricey for steering. If anything I'll ditch the beam and go with a Porsche set up....

hotsauce January 9th 2012 14:51

Gosh I wish I could post pics from my phone. I've cut the dash on my bus And am adding 914 gauges. Gonna be sick when I'm done. I tried the uploader below and it didn't work, so y'all are gonna have to wait for pics til I can get in front of a desktop. Sorry. :(

TSAF January 11th 2012 04:48

hotsauce January 15th 2012 21:17

Tacking it together. . . . .

Almost there.

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...27174733_n.jpg

And done-zo.

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...51212760_n.jpg

Gonna weld it in the dash tomorrow.

Supa Ninja January 15th 2012 23:56

Try to find a combo gauge with oil temp, that would make cluster even more awesome!

hotsauce January 16th 2012 00:08

That's what a friend suggested. I need to find a matching boost gauge to add in the top center too.

Supa Ninja January 16th 2012 14:34

I ran this boost gauge on my honduh http://www.frsport.com/Garrett-Turbo...SI_p_7793.html Just paint the bezel black and your good to go.

NO_H2O January 17th 2012 10:48
