It's made by a German manufacturer called GWD-Weiser, pretty pricy at 529 Euro but I really love the look of this one. It should provide for very short shifting (even shorter then the Gene Berg short shift).

Yes I've got one but not used it in anger yet.

Although depending on your pan it gets very close to the hand brake lever. I'm putting it on my 65 and the clearances are fine but I did try it out on my 76 1303 and the hand brake button touched the aluminium frame.

Also because of the extended angles it needs more than the original 2 bolts to hold it in place, you need to tap the tunnel for a couple of additional bolts.

Looks good but I'm yet to be won over.

@65cabby, did you buy it from GWD in Germany directly or is it also for sale by someone else for a better price maybe?

DORIGTT March 15th 2006 16:49

Am I correct in the belief that it is available for the Porsche 915 trans to Type I VW conversions?

65Cabby March 15th 2006 17:46

I'm not sure about 915 trans but mine was a special order RHD for a 5 speed so there possibly could be other types.

Mine came direct from Alfred Knuf the web site is not active althought his email is info@powertuningparts.de

tom'72 March 16th 2006 08:30

@ 65cabby, how much did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?

65Cabby March 16th 2006 12:15

Lets just say it came in a box of bits as I'm not sure I could have spent this much money, I'm thinking I might want to use a Gene Berg shifter anyway. But I have a receipt from powertuningparts for 595 euros delivered to the uk which worked out at about £400
It was a special order RHD for a 5 speed, in case that makes a difference but I've not seen any published prices from either Knuf or GWD

I heard of a French company today that makes similar shifters for rally applications for different brands, that shifter works by pushing forward for going up a gear and pulling backward for going down a gear and is supposedly priced a 325 Euro. I'll see if I can get more info on it tomorrow but I don't think the GWD shifter works like this (could be wrong)

I've got one - it works like a charm. I shortened my ebrake lever a bit.

Installation was.......interesting - what with the instructions in german and all. I got mine directly from GWD.

@danielzink, very nice project.

I see you went from a Gene Berg to a GWD shifter (those are my 2 options), what are the differences between the 2 and is the extra cost of the GWD worth it in your opinion?

Does the GWD shift like a sequential shifter (see my previous post) or like a regular VW Bug shifter?

Kafer_Mike March 17th 2006 15:49

I've seen Dan's car and the shifter in person. Both are sweet... :agree: :agree:

speedy March 17th 2006 16:53

hi there i have one on my car , the shift is very short and quite difficult to set up but once it is set up properly it is sweet :D , having said that reverse takes a bit to get into place but the rest of the gears are great , the shifter is made for gwd buy a german company , i think you can order from there site , but i cannot remember its name , will post when i find it

It shifts like a regular shifter (H pattern) but the gate is about this wide --> |_|

(an exaggeration of course - but you get the idea)
