Long overdue update

Well it is slowly getting there.

The CIS fuel system has been modified to run K-basic instead of the K-Lambda (uses a brain box for a frequency valve which pissed me off). The new GTI fuel dizzy is cool but one of the injectors is now shooting a little weak in its spray pattern. The injector in question was fine before the swap, tried a different injector and it performed the same way.

I rejuvenated the interior a bit pulled out the old fiberglass insulation and replaced with Naca insulation and generic Dynamat... Oh my is the sound deadener sweet!!! No more tin can door shutting :)

New sound system. Orion 500.4 amp running Orion components and an A/D/S/ 12" 301RS sub. It gets pretty tight and crisp. No boom boom ghetto stuff.

The engine is a little more oil tight with custom gaskets (fun with knives and scizors). A breather box was added so no more oil should get out the flywheel seal. Berg assembled (Manton) pushrods were added so I will feel more comfortable above 4500 RPM.

Still in the works is the 3.5" dropped spindles for the front. And trying to switch wheels to Dish 16"ers but not sure what to do with them finish wise, see the Wheel forum.

That might do it for now.

Later,

You go Pillow. Call me for the fuel distributor mod. that you will need to do next. :agree:

Hey Prez,

I pulled the screens as you told me a while back... Funny little things really :)

Hopefully tomorrow I can get a helper to take the engine from the stand to the bus to slide her in for a test run.

Great to hear about your progress, look forward to hearing more about the test run...

Pillow April 25th 2006 22:21

Engine is now in place and hooked up!

But a dead battery and impending rain forced a cancelation of the road test.

... More tomorrow :)

Mikey April 25th 2006 23:22

Good progress. Keep em' coming. :D :righton:

I can't wait to see it driving too.

Pillow April 28th 2006 22:39

Finally driven!

... The bad first. I still have the small oil leak out of the flywheel. This I originally attributed to crankcase pressure and the lack of a breather box... Wrongish. as it cannot hurt to run a breather, but still needs a new flywheel seal. The first red flywheel seal to give me any through at all... Unless it is something else which would be very disturbing.

... The clutch disk is slipping again. :( Long story here. But my fault totally.

At first the A/F ratio was 16:1 which really sucked. So a little tweaking and I fattened her up... Need to check the actual A/F ratio later.

The good is that it revs up nicely! I hit 5K like it was nothing... But it should slow down after that anyway with only a E100 equivalent cam.

Even with the issues I am takig it camping tomorrow :)

NO_H2O April 29th 2006 05:49

Get a breather on that thing. You could put one of those custom "Bud Light" breathers like Joe had on his for the FL. dyno day to get you by.

yellow73 April 30th 2006 22:56

Great to hear it is running. I hope camping was fun.

Pillow May 1st 2006 22:43

Camping was awesome! It ended up being a 160 mile round trip. We ended up at Cacatin Mountain MD state park. Nice place.

The Bus did very well I think overall.

FWIW the breather is in place... I just reinstalled a "wet" clutch... Grrr

I still need to tweak the A/F mixture. As the heads could be cooler at speed. They heat up pretty good at 65MPH (corrected MPH) too much wind resistance.

Oil temps were like non existent! I bet 180 the whole time. Sender got busted, so I just have to use the hold the dipstick method... I could put my fingers on the dipstick and not remove them at all! :)

One of the wheel bearings is bitching. So that needs adressed. Other than that it is solid.

The sound deadening is incredible! Big big difference.

I am old... The stereo is too loud.

The front needs dropped ASAP ;)

Sounds like a fun shake-down trip. You will get it dialed in. It took me a little while to get Joel's setup sorted out but I think it is good to go now. The last mod was to add a Mallory Hyfire 6A to go with the Unilite. I swapped out all the shock/damper with Bilstein shocks/damper on the front and KYB Gas Adjust on the rear (Bilstein doesn't make a bay rear shock anymore). Sway bar kit for front and rear are on the way. Drop spindles soon.
If you had hooked up all the Lambda stuff along with the 500k pot mod that I did, you could adjust the mix at hwy speed and lean it back out at low speed. It is way cool to have control over the mix and monitor it thru the A/F gauge and head temp gauge.
Is it still leaking oil?
