UK Circuit Raing News

Hi

After a drivers meeting this weekend we have some news as far as who racing and when we have agreed to race.

As you know aircooled vw's havn't been circuit racing in any numbers for quite some time in the UK and 2005 will be the first year that you can watch aircooled cars competing against each other and other manufacturers. The races are mostly based at Lydden Hill in Kent except two race at Brands Hatch and Silverstone early on in the season. We are racing along with other cars in a series run by SEMSEC and we run to their very loose rules as far as modifications go, so anything is possible.

SEMSEC run a lot of races each year and we cannot make all of them so we have picked a few where we can maximise the number of aircooled cars. we hope to have 6 cars at the following races.

these dates are
Silverstone Saturday 30th April
Lydden Saturday 4th June
Lydden Sunday 17th July
Lydden Saturday 3rd September

there are more dates and some drivers will be racing at further meetings at Lydden and Brands Hatch.

Anyone is welcome to come and watch, all the aircooled cars will be arriving the evening before the race, be pitted together and we will have a gazebo city and maybe an artic race lorry with huge awning, BBQ and plenty of cups of tea for allcomers.

a quick update on the cars

John ' ace' Aitkenhead has changed his bug to IRS and will be competing at ALL the semsec events, his dry-sump 1835 is very quick with a best lap time at Lydden of 49.8 seconds

Snott has bought a BERG 2007cc type1 with 48's which will be in for the Brand Hatch race on Saturday 2nd April

Jimbys Type4 heads are at GAC motorsport for modifications to get his 1911cc Type4 above 130bhp, the oval is currently going through some extensive body modifications. we have found a cheap supplier for yokohama race tyres

Triggers 1302S is in shakedown with a 2276cc type1 and will soon be getting its 5 speed porsche box and huge Type 4 engine.

Mark Vanstones cup car is ready to rock but the engine is still in build, a 125bhp 1776cc Type1. he has secured some sponsorship from the Uniroyal Team Challenge organisers for Uniroyal tyres.

also

for anyone wanting to first dip their toe in the water, there are sprint events held on the 4th june and 3rd september the same day as the circuit racing, to compete you dont need a race licence but a non-race licence is neccessary details at http://twmc.org.uk/allcircuit/

A little bit of an old posting but how did it go this year?

I used to race car 35 in 94/95 and eventually sold the car to a guy in Portugal. The power of 'tinternet eh.

Hello Richard

Went a bit quiet to be honest, didnt get the promotion it should have got.

John Aitkenhead is still around running the old Pink car, now has been IRS'd with a Hot 1835cc Dry sump motor in, goes pretty well.

Stuart Bayliss has been out a fair bit in his car (ex Steve Beaumont) has just been updated with a Berg 2. some thing on 48's. should be back out soon.

There were supposed to be a some more out but I have been side lined all year with my G40 race car so may only do the last race in my old cup car.

There were 3 more cars due out but every one has run into major probs

Trigger at Thingamies Beetles is going to run a 1302 or 03 and may also make the last round.

Jimby on here was doing an Oval but has now got a split bug to prep instead.

Then there is Mark Vanstone who has a Beetle cup spec car that has a 1776 to go in but work etc has sidelined him but there is a chance he could also be out for the last round.

Remember Stuart scott he has Chris Ryan's old car that he has now restored into another Zippy dayglo car dont think he intends to run it but may be tempted out soon for an odd round. He's busy doing the Gt championship in a GT3 Porka.

There is a couple of cheap ex cup cars for sale needing very little prep work to get them ready. If you feel tempted they are ony around the £1000 mark!

Next year should see more cars out just needs a bit of promotion. There are a few more people getting licences so it could be interesting.

Craig (car 72)

For those of us on the 'wrong' side of the pond, how about some information on the 1200 & 1300 cars set-up? I've always been curious about what you guys do for your race configurations. Fill us in :agree:

beetlecupdriver September 16th 2005 11:10

We had a series called the beetle Cup in the UK you had to run a supplied kit and could not change too much. This is how my car ended up.

Lowered front end, Standard front disks with competition pads, 2 sets of caster shims fitted, Bump steer kit, aftermarket castor adjustors, Bent top arms for more camber, long travel ball joints, and a heavy duty roll bar.

Rear end was up rated torsion bars with the poly bushes and lowered. Standard rear drums fitted with front drum wheel cylinders. No rear roll bar etc as they don’t work so just ran some restriction on the droop.

Spax dampers all round, Braded brake lines with comp fluid. The fuel tank had a bigger outlet fitted and fed the carb via an electric pump and bigger fuel lines through the car to an adjustable filter and fuel pressure regulator.

Windows were replaced with Plexi glass and every unrequired nut, bolt, washer, wiring along with all the under seal etc was removed, and ran it on buffed tires, with a solid mounted gearbox.

The engines came as a sealed unit, 1641cc, standard rods, crank and heads, full flowed with a heavy duty oil pump, Engle 120 cam, and lightened fly wheel. All the engines came with a Single twin 40 Dellorto carb kit and an exhaust system.

I fitted 1.25.1 rockers, and Auto craft shafts along with up rated valve springs and heavy duty push rods, and got some more taken off the flywheel and fitted a small pulley.
The carb inlets were polished and the plenum for the carb modified with balance pipes fitted to the manifolds, and the air filter replaced.

We had to run standard brakes, no dropped spindles, all steel panels, no extra aero devices, standard steering and pedals, no adjustable spring plates, no electronic ignition, gear boxes boxes could be selected from across the beetle range but no swapping of ratios you picked the box that you thought was best.

Wheels were restricted to any standard rims or you could use Cyclone Dragstars, we also had a min weight and ride height.

Think that’s about it, made for excellent racing with grids of 20 cars plus all with the same spec.

Pity it was allowed to die out.

65Cabby September 16th 2005 13:24

Craig
Good luck and keep posting the dates because I would definitely come along to watch.
I can't see myself getting back into racing though, for two reason , I was cr@p and I just couldn't cope with loving the car off the track and then trying to kill the thing on it.
I still do the odd track day to have some fun but it just doesn't make you sweat like you do in a proper race it's not the speed so much, I've got a 964 and I'm a lot quicker (hopefully as I would expect) round brands but the sheer wheel to wheel racing made the adrenalin pump, or did for me. I'm sure the guys at the front of the pack were as cool as ice.

John must be oh so quick in a 1835, which must be a third more power than the old volkspares engine.

Interesting your car had 1.25 rockers, by the letter they were illegal ;)

Richard
ex No35

beetlecupdriver September 16th 2005 18:45

You mean your car was the only one without them?????
Regs said you must use standard VW items, they had a VW part number!
Shaun sold them to most of the grid for use in the series.

65Cabby September 17th 2005 16:42

Haa haa do you know I probably was, I knew there must be another reason other than me for being soooooo slow. :)
I did buy some and also some double springs to stop valve bounce but never fitted them before I stopped racing.

Reading this thread made me go and look at my very old web page,
www.avnet.co.uk/raw/beetle.cup
it's had over 100 thousand hits but is 10 years old. Blimey

The details page shows the car as I sold it to the Portuguese chap. I'd love to know if he is still racing it. Funny but I remember it as being very clean and pristine, funny how your stanards change.

beetlecupdriver September 18th 2005 17:20

Funny looking Spax dampers on your old car they seem to read KYB

65Cabby September 18th 2005 19:06

Are yes well spotted, I borrowed the spax's for my speedster, thats why the KYB's look like new, they were. I find them way too stiff.

beetlecupdriver September 19th 2005 05:39

You should buy an old Cup car and come out. No regs any more several cars for sale around the £1000 mark, do what you like with the engine. Youd love it, sounds like you kind of miss it :D

65Cabby September 19th 2005 14:29

Mmmmm but I'm in the middle of the cabby build although I do have a 2.1 about to go on the dyno at JMR. That would give it more of a power to weight ratio than a varioram 993.

I'd need more life insurance :D

When you say no regs would that include weight. My old car had the bottom 8 inches replaced with lets say thin crappy replacement panels. It made the car come in even with my 12 stone about 50lb under weight compared to the other cars. I had to put lead everywhere, my first outing out I didn't know how under weight I was going to be , so I had to scroung 3 flywheels to bolt to the car.

beetlecupdriver September 19th 2005 18:12

Life insurance, whats that

2.1 in a cabrio waste of time you could never have it flat out with the roof down, it would ruin your Mrs hair.
Stick it in a race car, much more fun. I know of a few going cheap with missing engines, ideal :D

I ran thin panels too, under weight never was never a prob and my car is well under, come to think of it weren't the tyres supposed to have 1.6mm min tread, with a min ride height and I bet you never knew the gas board used the same spiral lock wire as were on those seals that always fitted a bit loose....... oop's maybe I shouldnt say any more .....:righton:

Beetleman September 20th 2005 16:17

What happened to this series?

Did it just fade away or is just not advertised anymore?

I always fancied having a go, but fiances were always way too short

D'oh, couldn't access the first page before, now I can and it's answered my questions d'oh,d'oh,d'oh :o

beetlecupdriver September 20th 2005 16:59

Beetleman

Pity you never got the chance to get out, if you like racing and Beetles it was a excellent fun combination.

If you still fancy having a go its cheaper than ever to get out now, there's no Beetle Cup anymore the cars are in an open series. There are a good few cheap cars available and the race entrys are not to dear.

65Cabby September 20th 2005 17:51

Hey Craig, it sounds like you you're got a sale or turn deal on these cars available.

So come on then, have you got any details of the cars for sale ,,err not for me obviously....
