so you think you had a bad day

just heard from my dad that a buddy's shop that he goes to work at for fun every now and then had a fire. battery tender caught fire during the night somehow. ignited a Boxster, then a Lancia. battery acid apparently exploded everywhere. 10 cars down and among them:

Boxster and 993
2 Ferraris
Lancia
$80k '56 Chevy with 900HP
Rolls
Lambo

don't even remember the rest. some of the cars can be saved but only a few. imagine dealing with the insurance company and clients alone much less finding a new place of business, the loss of income from those cars (or most anyway, guess the other's could be more income), loss of income from the cars you can't take on during this time, and the increased insurance costs (if they don't drop you) because you had to use something you've been paying the scumbags for all along.

damn. guess i had a nice day afterall.

Amen to that!

That kinda puts my day into perspective.

forgot to mention almost all of his tools and cabinets are shot due to battery acid eating away at them (stuff even seeped into the drawers due to the high winds) and they have to check the lifts and structure to see if the steel was weakened. they estimated temps at +1500 degrees F. several batteries caught fire, tires and a couple of gas tanks exploded.

not good. i hate seeing things like that happen to good people.

NO_H2O July 14th 2004 08:34

That depresses me,,,and I don't even know him.

After working in the apliance biz, I have have a hard time leaving anything plugged in. I don't even like going to be with the dishwasher or washing machine running at night. You never know what might happen. I certainly have a hard time leaving ANY battery charger un-attended.

I'm sure the insurance co would go after the battery charger company if they can prove fault.

Yuk.

and just to whine about my bad day now (which pales in comparison), looks like the contract (3rd one) on my house is falling through. they only are asking for me to repalce most every system in the house, all of which are in proper working order. :bawling: the guys mother got involved. seems he just had a kid with his girlfriend. you would then have to assume his mother cut them off afterwards, cause he sure doesn't have any at the moment.

jhelgesen July 14th 2004 15:59

Well, that blows. Guess the kid hadn't used up all his bad Karma point yet after knocking up the girlfriend. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Guess you don't want to go the rental route?

i heard from your buddies the other day and will be hooking up with them. maybe to install my engine. :D

jhelgesen July 14th 2004 16:52

Sorry, no job over there. Decided to hire a tech instead.

Should hear something today on a few others though, local, so I don't have to move.

Slum lord is the way to go

I thought I was the only one weird like that... being a fireman, guess what my biggest fear is...

Appliance manufactures are like NASA, parts come from the lowest bidder, and you get what you pay for. I'd never ride on the space shuttle

boygenius July 14th 2004 22:12

Maybe I'll turn off the battery tender at work at night. It is not exactly an OSHA friendly environment. The battery charger is within 10 ft. of the parts washer / oxy-acetalyne welder / 55 gal. oil drum / 4000 psi tank of nitrogen. Also known as my work area... :(
