0 - 60 mph performance

Hello,

I'm looking at getting a super beetle for a project in the coming months. I would like to build a German Look beetle with a large type 4 air cooled engine. I would be interested in the 0 - 60 times of anyone who has built a bug up to a similar spec. This would probably be mainly UK members, 60mph is the national speed limit in the UK and the bench mark performance time for most cars.

I would like the performance to be comparable to the current crop of "Hot Hatches" in the UK, 0 - 60 of about 6.5 seconds. Failing that 1/4 mile and 1/8 times would be useful.

I know that there is more to a cars performance than the 0 - 60 time, handling, chassis design, suspension etc but it would be nice to have a benchmark.

Cheers

Mike

70mph is our national speed limit ;)

and 0 to 60 times aren't often referenced, but 0 to 62 times are !

cos 62 miles is 100 kilometers, i think some motoring journo's way back when decided that it would be a nice round number to use :D

I've never timed my 0-100km/h but was about 2-3 car length ahead of an STI off the line and also 05 M3. T4 2.7.:)

Thanks SilverBullet that's the knid of performance i was looking for, after a lots of hard work of course.

Now I all I have to do is find a beetle, restore it and put a large engine in it.

Not only a large engine but also a correct gearing on the gearbox, lightening of the bug will give better results. But dont forget the ultimate, safety.:)

Silverbullet what is done to lighten the car.

Fiberglass fenders all round, cf decklid and bonnet, lexan rear and side windows, only a thin layer of carpet to cover the bare metal, light racing seats to come, presently using electric porsche seats which are heavy! Thats about pretty much of what I did.:) Might change my 993 brake set for the AP set, which are also lighter.:)

;) I think you got the clue

A 2 liter Type 4 will give around 8 seconds to 60/62 mph in a normal 1303 (which is kinda heavy).

mine is a normal type one with AS 1600 no carpets, just plain strip body bumpers inclded... 0-100 13.5 sec

Cool! A 1303 and Fastback weigh almost the same , IIRC, so my 1800 EFI type 4 will be pretty quick:) :)

There's no big fun in stamping on the loud pedal, side stepping the clutch and power shifting gears IMHO. The biggest fun is through the twisties where it lasts longer. In my book and based on 40 years of experience handling is where its at and I am happy with a bog standard motor until the overall package can cope with more power.
Things like 0-60(62) times are purely academic and only really fit for the lushes in the bar. On the rare occasions that I have out of curiosity tried a 0-60 time I could not match the published figures and on one occasion I was a full 1/2sec quicker hence my scepticism on their usefulness. If you are competitive then all that matters is the time taken in getting from A-B through skill challenging roads, not how quickly you can get from one traffic light to the next.
