speedy February 26th 2006 02:08

ricola February 26th 2006 17:08

Very nice job! Comsidering it isn't scooby :D

Should be a cool car when you've finished, nice detailing!

speedy February 27th 2006 02:24

cheers rich , all the oil pipes to go on today if they turn up, blue and red adonized fittings  , i have to admit i am a bit picky when it comes to the details , but i am going to hurry my arse up if i am to have it finished for easter, on another subject what did you find was the best way to bleed your brake setup?

Racelook February 28th 2006 14:47

Sweeeeeeeeeeet :D

ricola February 28th 2006 16:40

I used a Gunson's easibleed kit I bought from Halfords, worked great! On my other car with AP brakes a lot of people have problems with bleeding but with this kit it is no problem at all, always gonna be easier than getting the wife out for pumping! :D

cheers for that rich, i had a go today ,fitted a valve to the res and pressurized it but the brake pedal seems a bit spongy , have not got any seats so can't take it for a spin to test them ,anyway i got the engine running ,3rd turn over  so i thought i would take a few pictures to celebrate, checked the camber and am running -2.5 and -3 at the back so it's out with file tommorow to get them down to -1.5 , also got the door panels back ,looking good

starmember March 1st 2006 13:43

Didn't you want to use a inter-cooler or charge cooler.

But it really looks clean nice job :agree:

speedy March 2nd 2006 15:35

to be honest there was no room for a n intercooler in the back away from the heat ,having it sat next to the exhaust was pointless , so i am going down the chargecooler route , as we speak i am scouring e bay etc looking for a suitable example at the right price :D , don't suppose you know of any reasonably priced examples as in britain they are £450-650

beetle1303 March 3rd 2006 19:45

Thats a really nice ride. Congrats
One question though... Will your starter motor survive the heat from the exhaust system? or are you plaing on some kind of cover plate or insulation?

bucket March 4th 2006 04:40

Ok so I have been out of the hole VW loop for a will. right know I have a 91 toyota MR2 n/a. I was thinken about doing a turbo swap but I really want to get back in to GL bugs. ( had a 72 sup. with a 1835) I was thinken about using my toy as a daily deiver. but I was woundering how much HP a turbo type 1 and type4 made. sorry for the thread high jack.
edit: I was also woundering if any body ran water to air inter coolers. they work great and they can be small. And the setup is simple.

Chris
when i get a bit more moola i am after a small high torque starter , it should be far enough away to not be troubled by the heat , at the moment it has a bus starter on it and it is massive .
type 1 turbo motors can run anything from 140 to 550 hp depends how reliable you want the motor ergo how much money you want to spend , but a good reliable turbo motor with minimum maintenance should kick out 200bhp, my last one did and that was a daily driver

well progress has been slow the past couple of weeks , engine is sweet , i have altered the camber to 1.5 degrees negative on the back it was 3 when i first put the arms on drilled the deck lid and put the number plate on 1'' standoffs to get some air to the fan and fitted the seats and new rear panels with the new speakers , if the weather dries up i will be able to cut the carpet and glue it down this week , if not the fenders are back on friday so sould have them fitted , made some handles for the doors and the rear bench and handbrake cover and door pins out of alloy at work this week (to much spare time ) lol
till next time

That shifter is crazy! Where did that come from? Looking awesome.

Jason

speedy March 20th 2006 16:22

hi volkit is a gwd seq shifter you can buy them from bernard newbury in england or gwd in germany, they are about 560 euro's and come either for a 4 speed or a porsche 5 speed , a company called cae makes them , they are available for many different cars , i posted the web address on the interior\electrical thread somewere
j :D

ricola March 21st 2006 06:14

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they are sequential shifters, just sequential style being so high...

Looks liek Bernie has started selling them now, must have passed his testing!

Rich

speedy March 21st 2006 16:34

yes rich you are correct , they are semi sequential , on the way up you put in first knock it down for second but when you knock it forward for 3 rd the spring mech shifts accross the gate for you making a very fast short shift , go down the box as normal , these have hardly any travel on the shifts so are very quick
cheers
jon

ricola March 22nd 2006 05:11

Not taking anything away form that shifter as it is very nice, but my understanding is:

sequential: clutchless/gateless changes, just push the lever back or forwards to change up/down

semi-sequential: as above but you have to use the clutch.

The GWD is just a high quality, short throw, sprung shifter..

I apologize in advance if I am being daft here ... but ...

Did you use LEDs in your stock speedo? Did you use LEDs in all of your auxiliary gauges?

I have been contemplating on what I would like to do for gauges in my car. It seems the gauges I like do not offer a CHT gauge; the models that include a CHT seem to be as dull as my stock 1302 speedo.

I have seen the custom gauge clusters posted several months ago on this site and I like them. I am just looking for alternative ideas.

speedy April 7th 2006 12:07

oasis , i eventually am going to put my 914 guages in but could not face butchering my dash at the moment , so i bought some led's from a local maplin electronics shop , you want wide 50 degree diffuse 5 or 8mm leds , it is simple to work out the resistor loading , i put an extra two in the speedo ,it looks fab in the dark

speedy April 7th 2006 12:10

fast dub , i have pm'd you my telephone number cheers jon

beetlebum2 April 7th 2006 12:21

i love your car mate

i live in manchester and remember the car when it had its original 2007 turbo motor built by manchester aircooled, it was fast then so it must be astonishing now!

are you doin any shows cos i'd love to see it up close?

oasis April 7th 2006 12:50

Thanks for the well-detailed answer, speedy. This opens up my options. Cheers!

speedy April 7th 2006 15:21

beetlebum i will probably do a few shows later on in the year when the car is finished ,still waiting for the panels to come back from the painters
cheers jon

speedy April 10th 2006 01:14

oops

well i got everything back from the painters and fitted at the weekend , went for a testdrive ,the boost was running 18 psi ok fueling about right afr ok so opened it up in 2nd spun the wheels dropped it into 3rd and hit the gas ,jesus christ i have never been so fast it was like been fired from a gun ,i had a 2007 turbo last year and it felt standard in comparison , then bang no drive rip gearbox , all i can say at this point is i wanted a new gearbox anyway just not after 10 miles so will be spending the next few days undoing all the work i just spent months doing ,till next time

Chris Percival April 10th 2006 03:07

Great project! More high-res pics needed.. :) I am planning to use one of those shifters. What are your experiences with it? What does the throw work out to be? Any problems?

Dang way to tear it up!

It looks super sweet. Drop a cheap tranny in there and be gentle until winter when you can put a stout one in.

Way to go man!

DORIGTT April 12th 2006 09:28

So speedy,

Any truth to the shifter not being 'smooth' enough to shift it quickly?

speedy April 12th 2006 11:38

hello chris and dorigtt, the shifter works fine, it is a bit time consuming to get it set up ,you must put another 4 holding bolts in the base to keep the shifter solid or you will find that consistant shifting is near impossible , i made a plate to sit on top of the base and bolted through this, do this and shifting is a pleasure the throw is about 1.5"-2" depending on how you set it , on my standard i had to cut the handbrake down 25mm to use it but this is no big deal , i have heard allot of people have had problems with this shifter ,most of these will be fixed by making the base more ridgid as the pivot point is 150mm above the tunnel
hope this helps
cheers jon
p.s will get some high res pics on as soon as i can

speedy May 3rd 2006 11:11

well i get the gearbox tommorrow so hopefully i will be test driving at the weekend and be able to finish off the exterior (back to the painters ),when its all done i will take some high res photes and post them
cheers jon

Chris Percival May 3rd 2006 14:35

Can it not be mounted in 'reverse' ie backwards to how its mounted in the image above so it clears the handbrake?
