It's not a crazy thought, just an expensive one.

Well, not just an expensive one but a dangerous one also.

If you are going to do that, you better add the extra investment of kevlar. When there is an accident on the track and you see a big puff of smoke (and I don't mean da good stuff), that's carbon fiber blowing up. The chards holding what is left together in a mangled sort of way is kevlar.

Even at that, you better wear at least a mask because you don't want to inhale carbon particles.

Then, you might as well rethink the whole chassis because even with kevlar, you would want more than a roll bar.

Never mind. It was a crazy thought. ;)

Carbon Fibre Bug? Wow. Now THAT could be a 0-60mph slingshot.

Actually, regardless of the safety and expense issues, I think a Bug that weighs that little, but still retains it's other original physical dimensions (no aerodynamic mods for downforce), would be so light, you would have a fraction of the mechanical grip necessary to maintain control of the car at highway speed, and create so much lift vs. weight that you'd likely be airborne before 100mph, further compounding the inherent impact safety concerns of carbon fibre, and carbon Kevlar.

Neat thought though....

didn't Mr. Raby talk about that in one of his shows?
I think I remember him mentioning that he's either building a complete CF bug, or "just" a CF chassis.

Perhaps you mean his Spyder?

It's a tube chassis w/cf bug body. I think it's a customers.

that would be soo sweet does anyone have pics?

I was going to build mine out of carbon fiber but it is extremely hard to come by right now so I am going to use high strength fiberglass. I will be using a space frame/tube chassis since the stock pan will not work with my setup. I am currently working on perfecting the plug before I make the mold.

I don't think a carbon fiber body could do the same job as the metal shell as the metal shell keeps the chassis stiff and it would take a lot of carbon fiber to make it the same stiffness. As far as using kevlar in the carbon to keep it from turning into dust on an accident you have to remember that the accident has to be really servere to have that effect on the carbon. In an accident that bad the carbon dust is the last of your concerns.

The CF bug in question "MIGHT" be done for the owner of Herbie X. He bought the mold from Disney that were used to uild the cars for Herbie Fully Loaded. e was thinking of having the body layed up in CF for an HX2 project that if done would have a space frame, modern suspension, 2.7L Turbo Type 4, etc.

hold on a sec, heres wut i was thinking wouldnt there be a hard part of adding the rear suspention set up? i mean the back torsion bars and stuff is welded on the the back side of the pan. i menahow in the heck would i put that big bar on the chassis, oh w8 r u goign to do a body in cf or the body and the chassis. if u do just hte body then nvm

i love the idea, save ur money bro and do it, dont let these guys shoot that dream down cuz on so carbon dust and how u coudl fly before 100mph. screw em :D
