Upright Porsche Cooling
 

Hi all.

I've managed to get myself a nice type IV parts score to build a torquey 2056 :)

Part of the kit is a Porsche fan/alt machined case and CSP shroud.

Now I've read on a few sites that this setup doesn't cool very well, and that I'd be best of selling this lot to get a DTM style or a Cali conversion.

I find this fairly confusing, as I've known plenty of people to cool TypIV engines really well using this setup. Is it all marketing hype around the DTM?

I've always understood that the porsche upright setup is widely used because it's an effective setup (and it looks great) which allows easy access to carbs and spark plugs.

Anyway, the spec of my engine.

stock 2.0 crank and Rods, 1.7 rocker gear with swivel feet adjusters on 1.8 VW heads; 96mm pistons.

I need to check the cam I have, but I know I've got the choice of another two as well with my engine builder.

I've got a tangerine Racing replica exhaust (mild steel, 4-1) to go on there and there's a pair of EMPI weber IDF copies coming too, jetted for the combo, (44's)

The engine (from what I gather) was originally built to power a 70's bay window van, so should give loads of poke in my 72 Sparkafer (1200) bug :D

I'd like to keep the cooling I have, but I await your input.

The cam I have here is a Eurorace H Grind (286 x 485")

I think the other two I have with the engine builder are slightly more aggresive grinds

The Porsche set-up has been used for years. There are those who still swear by it.

The horizontal fan set-up has its following, too. The angle of the belt makes me cringe personally, but those who use it and like it have a lot more experience than I.

What I can tell you is I had a DTM on my Super, and will have one on my next Type IV engined GL car. There was never any hype to the cylinder head temps I was getting, and I had a Westach gauge on each cylinder.

i have had both. fwiw i currently have dtm on my 2.7 massIVe. the temps i have had a chance to see seem to be between 75 and 100 degree difference with the advantage going to the dtm. i had the csp setup on my 2275 type 1 the temps stayed around 375 to 400 in the summer. there is alot of info one these setups on this forum. do a search also wally and sandeep have the 911 setup and have made some changes that seem to be very effective with that unit. check them out. hope this helps

I had the autocraft 911 fan setup and it diddnt cool well on the street, I tried two other 911 setups before I bought a dtm which worked well.
The only problem I found was the lack of heating air and thermostat, which made me decide to sell my dtm and go back to stock doghouse.

If you live in a warm climate the dtm cools the most evenly, however I found that in my case (living in Canada) my engine was running too cool!
