How do i put a 915 tranny in a swing axle beetle

I'm a total beginner thats for sure and i now that there are a lot more qualified gys out there:)

I have a -66 ruby red beetle with a broken stock tranny that im going to replace, i have now a 1600cc engine in my car but i am going to put in a new type 1 engine in i have started to collect the essential parts based on a Okrasa 84mm crank and H-beams from Scat and a FK-10 camshaft along with 1.4 rockers still waiting for a engine block problably Cb's alucase and the cnc worked oval wedges.

I need a strong box because im going to race the car and not only that im going to drive to the races it can be something about 200-500km distances one way so will definitely need a 5 speed gearbox.

The box is prepayed and is coming to my place in July, as a beginner what have i in front of me? Is it possible to do this or should i sell the box and by a closeratio 4 speed that revs 3.8k with a speed of 90?

I'm sorry to bore you out this question is ask before but i did a search and found nothing a lot interesting but not excatly all that i needed to now, also made this question at shoptalks with no good response.

Thanks
michael :)

You will have to convert the chassis to IRS first, this is done by buying all the trailing arms etc from an IRS bug (or 944) and then welding in the inner pivot brackets. You will probably also have to clearance the framehorns for the output flanges of the trans.

Unless you are happy with fabrication, it will be a big job. You may find it all a lot easier using bug@5speed conversion parts...

Mike,

Not sure where you are located, but another option is the Bugat5speed conversion.

We make a kit for the 915 gearbox, but like ricola mentioned you will have to convert to IRS first to use our kits.

More info here: http://www.germanlook.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10035

Feel free to email or PM for more info if you would like.

I did put my loccation info in my profile so we practically live next door:lmao:

I was thinking about converting my -66 beetle with the Porsche tranny but in my future plans i will have 5-lug Brms on my -66 and with an irs convertion will be 4-lug so a more suitable car would be my Jeans beetle then with a 2332cc engine.

Please tell what i have in front regarding prices of your products and how much easier it will be if i choose them.

Michael,

No problem..

Price is around 1500 US, but to show you how much easier, I will need your email to send you pics.. or check this thread which I started a while back but haven't finished due to still waiting on my chassis to come back..

Sweet, but the sticky might be hard to find if not put in the transmisions forum.
