Porsche tranny question

Hey guys,

So far everyone (especially Ricola) has been really helpful, and I hope you can continue here.

Why, since they share the same suspension (correct?), can't you use a 944 tranny in a beetle? More specifically, I am experimenting with using an auto tranny, to be different for one, and to help in traffic as well. Could the 944 or 968 (tiptronic) be used with some chassis modification. I am going to rear coilovers, so the torsion tube can die for all I care.

Thanks a lot guys... you rule.

As far as I'am aware, the gears of a 944 tranny are near the engine and the differential is at the rear axle (for proper weigth distribution), so its a totally different set-up and therefore not useble for us.

There's no chance you can use a 944 transaxle. There's no bellhousing like we have. A 924/944 is set up with the engine at the front, a torque-tube/driveshaft in the middle into the transaxle at the rear. I believe the clutch is also at the rear, but i am far from an expert in the 924/944.

Long story short, stick with a 901/915 or a VW box.
