40mm spacers?

Hi,

I wish to install a set of alloy wheels on to my '61 beetle.

How do you feel about drilling the rotors 4x100 and adding a "cone like" 40mm spacer? Can this be unsafe?

I am saying "cone like" because of the shape of the early rotor-

Thanks!

Martin

Not sure what you mean with cone-like...

Anyway, I think in general re-drilling rotors is considered dangerous, although there are people who have run them without a problem.

I use custom drilled (new, not redrilled) drums and rotors (4x100), and a 1/2 inch flat spacer.

Rob.

Thanks for the tip.

By "cone" I mean that considering that the 5 lug drum has a slightlly conic shape, then the spacer has to follow that shape in order to fit over the rotor.

But why this Idea about drilling drums/rotors is unsafe? any possible explanations?

Martin

PS: I hope "conic" is a word in english :)

Hey Martice,

It's considered unsafe because the drums have a reinforcement (a 'web') where the stock bolts go through.
When you redrill the drums, the bolts/studs will be in an area that is weaker than the original area.

why not fit CB drop spindles? that way you can use late 4stud style discs or drums which are readily available as blanks or custom drilled.

A 40mm spacer is huge. I would not want to use one that big unless i was using the porsche made ones that bolt to the porsche rotors (if you have POrsche brakes)

Where can I find a 1/2'' flat spacer? I'm putting 16'' Jetta Wheels on my ride, but I need a spacer on the back. Thanks.

A guy from the Subaru club here made them for me.....
He used the wheel as a template and machined them out of aluminum.
