What is the rpm limit for a 1600 with stock valve springs and rods/crank? Mine makes a trumpeting noise at 5400 rpm. I'm not sure what valve float sounds like, but it may be points float. Will the stock rods/crank hit 7000?

I wouldn't turn it over 4500 myself. I think the crank might break at 7000.

914's redline at 5800. I don't know if a VW Type IV is the same or not.
I guess a stock T.IV could turn about 6200, but there are others here who know more about that than I. (chime in if you know) Yetibone |
So would you think there would be any need for a counterweighted crank on the street? In the book "How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Engine" it states that counterweighting would be benificial to T1's but for T4's they state that its bottom end is nearly bulletproof and that if you could destroy it you could probably destroy an anvil with a rubber mallet. Is there any merit to this statement or should I get counterweighting still?

Too funny that, in the week, I had just re-read the same few sentences and thought the same thing, the "anvil with a rubber mallet" is very strong, how true is it? JR

i asked this a few weeks ago on shop talk forums [typ4 engine]and got the reply from jake at massive that he tests all his angines to 7000rpm on the dyno.so in a street typ4 i dont see the need but some might disagre .lets hear your ideas. cheers rob |

I think that you are missing a big point (if im wrong correct me). The point isn't the maximum rpm the engine could make but where (rpm thinking) it will make the most ponnies.Right? From my experience I had a 1300 AB engine in my 1303 and there was no point revving it above 4600rpm, lets say 4800 rpm maximum,cos the engine was stalling beyond this point since it was stock and almost 100% healthy (pre heat pipes rusted and faulty auto-choke). By that kind of hi revving it blew twice both the head cover's gaskets...not funny at all... Chris (beetle1303) |
Get the crank counterweighted!! Anyway, my engine, with stock crank and 36IDFs, plus a cam similar to a 110 floats valves at 6800. I know not to rev a stock crank that high, but it can be done, just for how long is what I am asking
