Porsche 914 with 5speed tranny in bug?

Hi,

A friend of mine has a beat up porsche only worth for parts. I would like to know if it's possible to fit the flat 4 from this model, is it a type 4 engine? Also I think the tranny is 5 speed? Please telle me if it's worth, i cann get the qhole car for less than 200$

If it runs, buy it.
If it at least turns over, buy it.

The type 4 engine will fit in a beetle. It needs an up-right cooling kit and a few other modifications. I'm not sure of the specifics of the type 4 installation.

You could make your money back parting it out.;)

is it 2 liter porsche? Heads are big $

914 motor is very desirable if it is 2.0 liter.
Heads its in the heads only the 912 porsche and 914 shared these heads.
LARGER INTAKE and LARGER EXHAUST vs. any other type 4.
HOW TO TELL THE DIFFEREANCE? 2.0 porsche heads from typical 2.0 bus and 1.8, 1.7, bus and Porshce?
EASY: Porsche has three studs for the intake manifold ALL OTHERS 4 studs.
NOTE; if you get valve job and have to replace valves REPLACE EXHAUST with NOS EXHAUST valves, they have sodium inside of them (really!) they disapate heat more efficiantly DO NOT buy stainless steel exhaust there on ebay.
TRANSMISSION: depending on year the case is the same as 901 and 915 transmissions that fit the 911. HOWEVER there set up to run in reverse (the 914 is mid engine) and the linkage is totally different and it may be costly to converst. Probably cheaper to buy a 901 or 915 trany from a Porsche 911. Look at tech articles.
Buy both and piece out trany and make $ or sell magnisium trany for scrap $.
Good Luck

Hi again
Thanks for the info, on my side I asked the owner of the 914, it's a 1972 1.7Liter porsche. It may not be a 2.0L but it's still better than a single port T1. I may be able to fit it with the 4spd vw trans, it would be a good start. In 1972 were the 914 tranies tail shift or side shift?

$200.00 Buy it / part the car out

Im glad I could help. I recomend doing alot of research on machine shops to do a rebuild on whole motor or parts.
Also get your hands on manuals and books.
I recomend the following:
How tho keep your volkswagen alive a step by step manual for the complete idiot. by; john muir. ( the best boook I ever bought a VW mechanic recomended it)
Also any tech manual from Gene Berg. ( his ideas and parts are the best, however they after reading them I decided to go with type 4 power.

I have a 2.0 bottom end and Im going to open up 1.8 heads for lager valves.
I have 901 porsche trans
92 porsche c2 calipers
87 944 porsche trailing arms
944 disk brakes
etc etc.
My car will be so sick. had to brag a little good luck

72 914's have tail shifters. Also if you are considering converting to a 901 5 speed grad the shifter, early 914 shifter=early 911 shifter. If you are considering the conversion you will still need a 911 gear box for the nose cone, hockey stick and possibly the housing.
