Space saver tire in trunk, battery reocation
2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, i was looking at ways i could get the battery up in the trunk, to help with weight distribution. but i still would like to have a spair tire "just in case" when im on the street.
So i stuck the battery where i wanted it (As low as possible) and then took my dady Space saver tire out of his 911 (as i will be runing 130/5 lug pattern) and looked at ways i could mount the battery down, aswell as the spair. What i came up with was a pedistal idea... what it would be is a pedistal from the tire well, that mounts the spair at an angle to clear the battery bellow. Here are some pics of the idea (Note:i used some bar to test my idea, this is not how it would mount, the posistion would be almost the same though) Would this be a good idea? |
this is how I did mine.
I was able to slide the space saver under the battery. I made my own brackets to mount between the strut towers. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...b/fcad2331.jpg |
I saw in one of the magazines that someone just turned the spare tire over and placed the battery in there, had a bracket or something that held it in the rim.

vujade, that is an option i was looking at before. Personaly i dont like the idea of having the battery up so high if i dont have to. Although on my Audi 4000 Quattro, the battery is high like this... so i guess its not a big deal.
I kinda like the look of the wheel sticking up at an angle. jhelgesen, I think i have seen somthing like you are saying, looks clean for sure! but then you have the hassle of takeing the batery out ever time you need to remove the spair. for me this is no good as i usualy take all items i dont need out durring a Solo-2 race, and the spair tire is one of those items. |

So i fabed up a pedistal for the spair, and fabed up a batery hold down system made from aluminum/steel.. Here are some pics ;) |

Looking good. :righton:
I don't know if I can fit my spare and my battery up front like you did, I have a standard beetle. I might have to leave the spare at home but most likely I will leave the battery where it is. ;) |
very nice work :agree:

Found my issue of VW Trends, He mounted the space saver on top of the fuel tank like you said and left the battery in the rear. I should be able to make a holder to locate the battery in the front tire well. Now I just have to remember what battery in my garage goes to my car. ;) |
