944 sway bar instalation ?
 

On my 74 super beetle im trying to mount a early 944 sway bar.
I know i have to make some mounting brakets (will be using modifiyed 944 units)
My question is do i need to make the "arms" on the sway bars paralel to the swing plates to have correct geometry? aswell as having the drop links totaly vertical? or does it not matter?

Maybe some one can show what they did with there 944 sway bars ?

If I can get to the store tonight I will buy a digital camera and take some pictures of my setup for you. I'm pretty sure that I had the links vertical with the suspension fully compressed or have way compressed. I can't remember right now but when I put the suspension back on this week I will let you know.

Was curious if you ever got shots of your sway bar set up..

Are you using the wide alumn arms.. with an early or late 944 swaybar..

From the other springplate pics seems like you fabbed some brackets to mount the bar to the arms.. what about the torsion bar housing.. did you cut and weld the 944 brackets to the beetle torsion bar tube..

I am using the late aluminum arms. I used some 1" square tubing to make the sway-bar mounts. I than used some plate steel to build up the bushing seating surface. I tham simply ordered the stock 944 bushing clamps and hardware. Here are a few pics...

i cut the mounting tabs off a 944 beam then added some 3/16x2" plate steel to the tabs, then welded the tabs to the beetle beam. I like the way BG did it, looks good. A little more fabrication involved though, looks like he had to drill/tap the mounting holes.

Lot of options to consider in doing this..

I have a subaru WRX front and rear swaybar in my basement.. different sizes and shapes so I will see if I could some how use these on the vert.. If they are narrow enough I may be able to fab something like BG and adapt these..
It is always better to use free stuff, if you now what I mean..and the size is about 19mm or so, so it should be in the ball park..

I just saw the pictures today, the mounts look cool :agree: that's a cool way you made them, with 1" square tubing. I can't wait to see the whole thing together... keep up the good work. :D

Where can I get those shackles? Pelicanparts are US$75+ each! I just need those! :)

I got mine off of e-bay with the bushings and sway bar for $35 shipped... :D :laugh:

You will need the 944 shackles to be able to adjust the camber of the rear suspension. If you can make the WRX bars fit the 944 shackles then go for it. ;)
