Watercooling your aircooled...

I am planning on putting in a wbx engine in my 70, and wanted to know if anyone here has ever done an engine swap, other than air-cooled, and can help me out wit hthe rad. I'm looking for info like, what rad to use, what sizes, how to mount it, where do you run the piping, etc. Any help would be great!

Thanx a mil

Mike,

Check out my trials and tribulations at http://www.vanbran.com/bug/conversion1.htm

Also make sure to check the work from Panelfantastic !

There are many engines you can use, I am not sure that a WBX is the best choice. A lot of Vanagon owners swap these out for Subaru or other engines.

Usually the rad is placed in the front, running the pipes either through the passenger compt or under the floorpan. As to the size of the rad, use the same size (or bigger) than the rad that came originally with the engine. Chances are that airflow will be less than in the original car, so you will need at least the same size.

Hope this helps,

Rob.

Wow Steve, that is an awesome car !

I like the bracing you did for the framehorns. That's an excellent idea !

ya see, the whole idea of this project was to keep it VW. I'd like to fit a watercooled, vw engine (from ANY car), into my 70, and actually make it kick some tail. The only 2 engine's that i've found that can fit in the bug, while still closing the deck lid, is the wbx, and the 8v from a rabbit. The wbx just "seemed" as if it would be more fit to go in the bug, since its an opposed 4 cylinder engine, and has pretty much the same make up of a type 1, or type 4. I don't soppose any of you have any experience or links to sites that have any info on doing an 8v conversion, or have any other VW watercooled engine that would fit in the back of my 70???

thanx for the replies

I saw a picture of a 1.8T fwd setup placed mid mounted in a beetle. Basicly someone took the front drivetrain and placed it in the rear of a beetle. The engine is where the firewall used to be. Its all VW ;)

Superman runs a GTi engine in a Super. Check his profile.

Hi Rob

Thanks for that, I think a Kafercup brace do a good job as well.

Im pretty sure Superman used a whaletail so he could fit the Golf motor in.

Yes, i've seen that 1.8t setup many times, but I am not THAT experienced with cars, especially beetles. That looks as if it will take a MAJOR undertaking, and way out of my abilities. I was looking for something that I could fit in the rear, and bolt up to the tranny (Using an adaptor if needed)

Steve, do you know if he needed that whale tail to fit the gti engine? if he can fit that, i wonder how difficult it would be to, say, put a g60 engine in there. Where can I find whale tails anyway? I know that i've seen them at creative car craft, and i heard through the grape vine that carbonjoe.net WAS making one, but now his site is down for an unknown time.
