Parts List

Hey there everyone! My name is Scott (aka Scooter), and I am new to the German Look side of Volkswagen. I recently bought some 944 trailing arms off of an 87' (I don't know what style, yet to recieve) and I was wondering what it is that I will need to bolt these onto my super. I know I will need to swap out the piviot bushing for that of a Beetle, and make a couple of modifications to the spring plates. What else is needed for this swap? How do I mount rear shocks? Will I have to use the swingplates off of a 944, or do they sell (adjustable preferably) springplates with the 944 bolt pattern? Thanks.

probably best to do a search. these items have been covered in great detail in other threads and would be tough to capture it all here. here is an overview though.

T1 or 944 springplate bushing can be used. just two different methods to the same result.

use the 944 springplate. it has all the adjustment you should need.

consider swapping to 944 torsion bars, but not required.

replacement of the inner bushing to T1.

shocks...a fun one. several methods out there including reaming the lower shock bushing to 14mm, using a step bolt to go from 14mm to 12mm, and the route i went (from VeeDub Customs one of our sponsors) was to have a new bushing made for the shock with a 14mm sleeve.

you will have to clearance the shcok tower some for the springplate.

you will need 21" axles. several options here since the T1 tranny is 90mm CVs and the stub axle of a 944 is 100mm. can go with a 21" 33 spline Porsche axle so you can run both size CVs. or go to T181 output flanges on the tranny and run a Porsche axle with 100mm CVs on both sides. think someone is also making those output flanges from billett.

i (and boygenius) am overdue on pulling together a tech article on the conversion..or one way to do it. in the meantime just do some searches. i think one of the threads was "Why T181 Flanges".

Thanks a lot zen! The trailing arms also include the axles, so maybe they will fit with the different output flanges. I'll try doing a search to find out what else I need. Thanks again.

If you can't find type 181 drive flanges www.mooreparts.com has billet type 1 drive flanges with the type 2 100mm face on them for around $70...

They dont have a picture for them but they are pretty cool. They are an "EMPI" product.

Hey Thanks Boygenius,

I was trying to figure out the fast way to connect my T1 trans to the wide 944T rears on my convert. This solves the flange problem this week. Boy the VW forums sure make these conversions easier to deal with.

Thanks,

Randy

Randy,

you can also go with a 21" 33 spline Porsche axle so you can run both size CVs (90mm on the inside and 100mm on the outside).
