AMC? heads

Hello all,
I just found somewhere in my country, new T4 1800 heads. They are complete with valve guides and seats, less the valves. I looked on them to see what casting are they and the only sign on them is the word AMC casted on them. Do you know what this means and if they are any good for making from them some serious performance heads? Their price was fairly good (I think), something like 110Euro a piece (don;t forget they are unused). So, what do you think?

The AMC heads are aftermarket replacement heads for the Type IV engine. They can be ported, and will accept larger valves, but I believe the combustion chamber shape isn't conducive to high compression without some serious mods.

There's a fellow who has taken 2.0 AMC heads and made them better than any Type IV head based on a stock casting. Relocated plugs, large square exhaust ports, and 44 x 36 valves.

www.aircooled.net sells them. I have a 2.0L laying around with a set on it, I haven't installed it in anything yet so I can tell you how good they are.

ALL AMC head need every surface remachined, every valve replaced and every guide and seat tossed and replaced.

They are good castings, but we treat them like theyare30 years old and rebuild them our way! Their seat installation is horrible, and seat material is worse!

Thanks for your advices, especially you Jake. If I finally get them I'll have some very good reasons to persuade the guy to give me a better price!

Thank you

Yup, thanks Jake. I knew they needed a lot of improvements to be made worthy of a performance application, but couldn't remember specifics.
