what is the chrome molding made of? would it be a good canidate for powder coating? It should be right, as you only need the thing your powder coating to carry a charge, right?

I was thinking my '63 bug would look pretty sweet with say CF head light rings and black powder coated molding, the car's color is paprika red, sort of a brownish maroon.

Many people have powder coated their molding. Some early trim was stainless and the later trim is aluminum.
