Progress with my 996 brakes!

Got the rears made up now.

I'm using one of Lanner's 944 ebrake kits.

Couple of pics of the front hubs on my site too. Only the front caliper adapters to make now which should be easy :D Then I just hope that the stock master cylinder will be up to the job!

Hey Rich,

What MC are you using? I'm sure you'll end up with a great setup, and I'll probably be copying you, so I need to get all the details!

I'll try the stock one first, if that's no good I'll use a golf 22mm one...

I knew it was going too easily... I have just been measuring up for the front adapters but the caliper won't go fully onto the disc, the pad is fouling the spindle caliper mount

This is far on the caliper goes, I need another 2-3mm to centralise the pad

The back:

Looking at old threads it seems Andreas (Typ Vier) got away without this problem as he has bigger discs for his 6 pots, although I have found about the same measurements for the adapters, I haven't measured the offset of the lugs on the front caliper though (holes in caliper and offset relative to the pad centres)...

I guess I will have to clearance the spindle about 3mm (maybe the pad plates slightly too) unless anyone else has found a solution?

At the front, you must use porsche 944Turbo 1987 HUBs, with porsche NON turbo spindles, make bearing spacers and make a similar caliper aluminium brackets like rears. With your superbeetle DISCS spindles the 996 wonīt work.

ricola July 24th 2005 09:29

I've decided to cut down the superbeetle caliper flange a bit and redrill the holes further in and spotface further back. That should give a simple caliper adapter like the rear one...
I'll get pics once I have some progress...

I thought the same, But I donīt do that because the SB spindles are special, There is very few and they cost a lot of money!!
And in case someday I wish to go back to the factory discs

ricola July 25th 2005 03:44

I won't be going back to stock and I don't think the disc spindles are that hard to get hold of in the UK even if I did :D

finalised the front design now...

Spindle after skimming but before new holes are tapped and clearancing for brake pads:

Finished assembly:

Just have to tap the other spindle now and then I'll strip everything down for painting. I'm fitting all new front bushes now too, to get rid of the shimmies :D

what disks are they on the front???
who did your cross drilling??

ricola August 1st 2005 03:25

I've been sidetracked with refurbishing the suspension arms and house DIY this weekend. Over the next couple of days it will go back on the car...

Front discs are 996, they come cross-drilled as standard. For all the details go to my website.

Just getting all the parts together for my upgrade now, and am unsure of wether to go for 996 rear calipers all round. using a carrera 3.2 disc up front. I already have four rear calipers already and want to know if anybody could forsee any probs.

ricola August 2nd 2005 16:39

Fronts are finished now...
