My oval...

Thought I would post a few pics. Started this project in late September. Lots of work has been done, lots still left to do!! One person working sure takes some time

Anyways, brief history of the car, my dad bought it in 1981. It was totally stock 36/crashbox ect... He gave it to me for my birthday when I turned 15, we spent about a year and a half "updating".

Well finally in December of 1992, I was behind the wheel!! Well two weeks later a Chevy 2 ton pick-up pulled out right in front of me.....Well, needless to say I will always remember Dec 21,1992!!

Since then (a body shop did fix the crash damage) the car sat in a storage unit for about 5 years, once I moved into my house it has sat in the garage since then. I figured might as well start the project over again....
Its not perfect, but its mine!!

Sorry for the long post, here are a some pics......

I guess you could say I am going for a kind-of Euro/rat-rod/Japanese styled car??? Thats about how I would describe it.

Nice cage

That's a nice, safe looking cage. I'd like side intrusion bars too but I'd probably have a bar that goes under the dash. What inspired you to put that in? Wait, let me guess... a 2 ton Chevy?

Is the cage attached to the body at waist level or rain gutter level?

Do the rear bars support the chassis forks?

I have a 6 point alloy bolt in cage in my oval is a bolt-in. I'm sure it would only stop the roof collapsing in a rollover but you can see the front bars flex and vibrate over bumps.

How much did all the bars weigh?

Your car looks hot just with the cage and the seats.

Hey thanks for the reply!!!

I figured since 92, cars/trucks have grown rather large, so yeah I guess you could say personal safety was the motivating force!!! :)

The hoop isnt attached to the body other than at the bottom plate/boxes...
Same with the door bars, they tie to the mounting box/pan as well.

The downtubes do in fact tie into the frame horns....As for weight, Im not sure, it is steel, so it is pretty heavy, I would guess maybe 100-150lbs total???
Not for sure though....

Thanks again,
IZ

could you show more pictures of the roll cage? particularly the front and top? I'm looking into one from autoweld chassis but this one looks pretty good too. i'm looking into chromoly but if this one's signifigantly cheaper shipping i may go with it.

thanks
james

PS.. it really looks great, i love the car and it's an inspiration for my project! :) :) :) :) that really is what i need right now and it's working! woo!

is the cage welded to both the body and the pan?

thelazerviking January 17th 2006 18:26

ohh... i was expecting a 10 point cage.

it looks like it is welded to the body and pan... i wonder what would be the best way to not do that

...run 2 or 3 bolts through the plate that connects to the pan? it probably wouldn't be as stiff then though.

it's pretty crowded looking back there, maybe it will change once the intereior's done. I'm thinking i want to do that but instead of run those 2 big bars the the frame horns i could add another lower cross bar to connect them. less obstruction in the rear view mirror and maybe stronger too

i really like this car how it's coming though, it's one of my favorite projects on the internet. very clean and almost perfectionist in a way, like building a hot rod.

I also really really like Racelook's project. I can really relate that to mine

Yeah, It is mounted to both the channel/pan with 1/8th" plate/boxes

It is only an eight point, I felt a ten would be a bit overkill for my car.....

I really appriciate those words, I am trying to not be overly-anal about this project....Its hard not to be.

I am way to harsh/critical on myself....I need to remember it will never be perfect!! This car has seen too much crap in its 50 years to ever be perfect......
