911 fan on a type IV case

Hello, I'm in the process of modding a type IV case to adapt a 911/11 blade fan. On the type IV case, the crank hub when a pulley is attached to is, does the pulley to hub get shimmed? Also has any one ever seen a serpertine belt pulley for a 911 fan?

Hello,
Im in the process of building a horizontal fan setup at the moment.
This is the second one I`m building. The first one I did was about 15 years ago and used a 5mm steel plate at the front of the engine. Pictures can be seen in the engine gallery/ 1302 convertible with turbo (still works and cools). The crank pulley needed to be shimmed out with 2 or 3 shims (can`t remember). Now I`m using a 10 mm aluminium front plate and will have to make a solid spacer as shimming would not allow the pulley to sit in the centre.
Hope this helps

I'm not clear

Hello Andreas, thank you for your response. Andreas I am not clear concerning the fan hub. I beleive you picture shows were this adapter will be stationary. This is my need, I have a type IV going into a 1302. It will have a 911/260mm fan and ring attached. I had Rimco arc the case for the fan to contact. I will be using a CSP shroud. I am trying to mod up some pulley besides the old "V' groove pulley style. My project will have a 6 groove serpertine belt, with a idler pulley. So the fan will have a serpertine pulley also. From what I have seen everyone is just adapting a type one crank pulley to the type IV crank hub. I intend to have both the hub and pulley mechined from one peice of matal. Thus the need to konw how much shimm between the fan and crank hub.

Wish me luck :)

Type vier is that the burgundy convertible with 386 hp to the wheels in germany. If that's the one is that car sold as yet.

Typ Vier April 18th 2006 23:16

Yes thats the one and its not sold. He did keep it and its displayed with the broken trans in his shop MGRacing in Hanau Germany.

It's really wild how tthat car could reach 170mph all in a convertible. I have a 911 fan to put on a type 4 but i want to do an upright conversion similar to Rolf Klaus setup. I understand that rolf klaus shrouds are the best in germany. Lastly tell your friend to use a porsche 915 gearbox.

Hey,
He`s used this gearbox only cause he had the parts lying round and the real life expectancy has never been tested in a beetle.
At the time it seemed like a good idea, mind you that trans was fitted in 1999, so it lasted around 5 years before it gave up.

Does your friend make stuff for the type4 engine and you guy's have any plans to make a 911 upright fan.

Typ Vier April 21st 2006 00:53

Sorry, he`s not working on air cooled stuff in his business, only on his own project.
I`ve gone away from the 911 setup, mostly because of engine room restrictions with fitted PORSCHE trannys in early cars.

You said you have gone away from 911 setups, are you refering to upright 911 setups or just all 911 setups. If this is then the case what will you use for cooling the engine. I forgot to ask what size crank pully and fah pully is he using and also whic h of the 911 fans and what size.

Typ Vier April 23rd 2006 06:13

Sorry, I meant upright 911 setup, horizontal with a 911 fan is my choice. The fan is a 11 blade out of a 3.2 Carrera, fan pulley size is standard 911 and on the crank side is a type one power pulley, can`t remember the size. Also, the one I`m gonna use is with one of my mates at the moment as he wants to copy it. I`ll post the size as soon as I get it back. There`s a bit more work involved to make up the parts for this fan setup but it`s really not that complicated. The most work goes into the shrouds as each side is made of two pieces, inner air deflector and outer shroud.

I am wondering how much horsepower these fans really suck from the engine. Would there be any problems with turning the fan down as i would think that the thrust loads would be great.

Typ Vier April 24th 2006 05:15

Never worried about thrust load, never had any issues nor heard of. However if a bearing fails replace it and keep driving. I think Alex did an article about these fans a while back, should still be somewhere. There are different diameter fans available as you know and it sure is possible to turn the fanblade down, however you`ve got to be careful when turning them down as the blades are very brittle and can break off easily :o
