Oil Additives
There seems to be shelf-space galore for them at the local auto store.
Are they necessary? |
I've never put much faith in oil additives. Many are Band-Aids for your smokey engine, many contain "Performance Enhancing properties" , Some boost fuel mileage, some say they fight wear, and some say they clean the innards of your engine.
To avoid the confusion, I just go with good quality oil only. I'm not saying that some of them don't provide certain positive results, I just don't like the whole "Buy our snake-oil 'cause we sponsor NASCAR!!!" thing... can't make myself buy an additive by endorsement alone. I remember in the early '90s when Slick-50 was the shizzle, and all my buddies had to try it in their 5 litre Mustangs, and Z28 Camaros. Many of their cars blew up anyway. |
Thanks.
All of my past cars reached six digits faithfully without any additives -- just good, solid routine service. I was looking for something to clean my driveway and just saw all sorts of product for gas additives (which I didn't ask about) and oil additives. I just didn't want to be a dunderhead and say, "I never used it so I automatically know I don't need it." (There's a guy on another forum who insists drum brakes are just as good as disks in performance situations. I felt I better ask about this before I place myself in his category.) |
