EMPI vs. WEBER vs. DELLORTO
hi guys, in the near future I have to buy some nice carbs for my bug..originally I wanted weber idfs, but I found a set of EMPI HPMX. Any experinces, opinions about the empi carbs??? Don't know nothing about the quality etc...please help me if you can. cheers: zo

Ive got some NOS Dellorto 40's w/ CB Linkage & T4 Manifolds I may
be talked into letting go for the right price :D |
The EMPI copy is a Chinese copy of a Weber. That should tell you all you need to know.
The best carb you could ever use on a VW is a Dellorto DRLA. |
Hi
A friend of mine had twin Weber copies, one was fine, the other leaked from day one, he was lucky the vendor replaced it for him. Steve |

Curious to know why the DRLA is THE best? It's all a matter of personal opinion, I love my Weber 44IDFs but hae yet to try anything else (well other then my stock solex pict30...) I'm curious to see a set of these empi's first hand to compare. I'm under the imression alot of people talk trash about them because they are labled "empi". But i'd be very surprised if they were in fact made by them. Dells are a well known brand. Lots of carbs can be made to work well with the vw, just need to know how to set them up properly. Alot of time, it's poor setup on the installers part that gets carbs bad raps. Alex |

DRLA carb came out after the IDA. It was a more advanced design that works better/smoother on a VW/ This is one of the reasons why CB started importing them so many years ago. |

If you could send me some nice pics, and the "rigth price" in email (bogara_zo@freemail.hu) that would be nice ;) |
Thanks for all the answers..read here a lot of useful informations. But I'm a bit confused at the moment.... Before opening the topic I thougt that weber's idfs are the best on a VW, but didn't know nothing about Empi. (talking about a 2.0L nearly stock daily driver that have to be reliable first...so not for racing track)
I know a lot of people around me who are in trouble with reconditioning their used carbs...so I decided to buy a new one (or similar to new)...but webers are very very expensive..and heard a lot of negative things about the italian, spanish made versions what are available for me in europe... I made some searches on ebay, and found theese empi hmpx kits that seems good enough for an available price... Any other comments are very well come!!! cheers:zo |
DLRAs adn Webers
There is a guy in Italy, that rebuilds DLRA and has them on ebay most of the time. I have several sets from him and they work great, he knows what he is doing, since I believe you are on that side of the pond.
In the USA, the best guy to get your webers or dells (DLRA) rebuilt is ACE or air cooled engineering. 360 W. 6100 South, #A Salt Lake City, UT. 84107 (801) 943-1234 ART runs a great shop there and I have never hear anything bad about his work only top notch and great customerr service. He has rebuilt a couple of 40s and 45 Dells for me and they worked perfect. I would go with the Dells, but for you engine, I wouldn't go higher then Dell 40s or 44 webers. I run Dell 45s on my type 4 engines, but you could easily jet the dell 40s to do the job. Gary |

Stay away from the EMPIs and get a good set of used Webers or Dells. If you are looking for someone to rebuild them, I'd put Mark Harney up against anyone. I had Mark rebuild my 44IDFs and they came back looking and running like new -- http://www.carburetorclinic.com/
If you want to see Mark's experience with a set of HPMXs, go to his blog and look under Tech Articles -- http://waitresses.servebeer.com:81/vwpage/ |
