G50 coupled to a type 4 engine

Has anybody ever tried this?
I'am not talking about space constraints in the car due to the larger G50, nor any suby engine mated to this tranny.
Just what has been done to mate the aircooeld type 4 engine to the (early) G50 '87-'89 tranny ?

I cound only find one oval beetle in GB with a turbo type 4 , but not much on what clutch, pp and fly he used.

Thx,
Walter

Wally,

What are you planning ? :D

Are you refering to Mark Thurston's oval ? I have that issue of volksworld but no info other that a 2466 T4 turbo with G50 gearbox.

Yes, Mark Thurston's oval indeed. Thanks for informing me about the content not pointing out the details of the mating! Saves me from complicated search for a copy..;)

Its just that I located one quite 'cheaply' and noticed a few things of interest about them. Its all good, except for the weight...My mag 915 weighs 45 kg; the 87-89 G50 (including the stock - looks like a bug@5speed bar - front alu mounting bar) weighs 68kg on my scale. A mag 412 box was 35kg. I suspect a bug box is about 25-30 kg...

My 412 already has an hydraulic clutch system at about the same place

hydraulic operated 3500lb clutch and one-off flywheel
(thurston fabricated gear shifter and linkage)

The above are the things of interest. Did he use a 240mm (stock) size disk?
Ring gear on the pp like 915 or on flywheel...that sort of things :)
I would shorten the bell housing like some porsche owners do that transplant these into pre-87 911's... since the pinion shaft is rather short, you'd think the shaft should be kept the length it has (unlike the porsche conversion of i.e. patrick motorsports).
Then you'd have to fabricate really s/ th custom, but...the box is then not longer than a 915...and THAT already fits without cutting torsion tubes in my 1303...
See the point I am getting at? :D

Still, its 20 kilos heavier and the 915 won't break either...better put a high quality LSD in that and be done with it :)

Just asked KEP: they make a 228mm (9") disk with G50 spline pattern for about $ 180,-- :)
