923 trans
 

Hi, anyone know of a 923 Porsche trans, I'm told it was the 5 speed with special gearing for the 912? It should look like the 915 not the 901.

Came in the 1976 912E only.

They are haaaaard to find.

I was thinking of going that route with my Ghia, but Jake said that they used one year only bearings and those will be getting extremely hard to find :shocked: .

This gearbox also has a 7:31 R&P, same as a 914 box. The 923 is a 915 with a 901 bellhousing so you can use a push clutch setup instead of a pull setup commonly found on a 915.

You can convert the 915 from a pull to push quite easily though :D

Actually, I don't know. It would depend on the condition I guess. Someone here had one in his 912E and sold it when he replaced the drivetrain with that of a 911. I believe 923 ended up in Shad Laws Type III. This had to be about four years ago or more...

Hi everyone, some time ago someone of this site listed a spec sheet for the 911 transmission. But I did not see any informaton on the 923, since the 923 was geared for the type IV, and having its gearing shorter is different than changing the bellhousing to fit a type IV engine. The members name is MX67, also n 7.31 ring & pinion I beleive the 7.31 ritio is fifth gear from the paper on 911 I have. The ring and pinion are in the 4.285 and some 3.875 ration

Hi, I just received a PM from a member on Pelican Parts. The 7:31 and 8:15 are correct ring and pinions, sorry about that sandeep, had it wrong, I was thinking in a manner of regular VWs :o

I recently came across a 923 on the Samba.
It had been listed for six months or so with no takers.
He wanted $800 for it, and sold it to me for that, but he paid for shipping.
It was a little scary, because the car was in a fire, then the junkyard bent the shift rod taking it out.
It went to my local ace for a go-through, and all checked out well.
THey were able to straighten out the shift rod, and the case didn't get warped from the fire.
It did come to $700(!) for a gasket set and look-through.
Good thing it didn't need any parts!

The scary thing was, if it had been robbed for the close-ratio gears...
A tooth count, along with a cross-reference, showed that it had the correct 1-4, but a closer-ratio 5th from the 2.7 Carrera.

The master said it looked like the box had never been apart,
He was betting that the .072 5th was installed from factory.
Doesn't hurt my feelings, as this is going in a type3 with type4 power.

In digging around, the 923 boxes are out there...
Search 923 or 912E in Google.
There were a couple of different Porsche-specific and 912E-specific that had a used box or two...

While the release type can be easily ironed out, try pricing out those gears:eek:
Unless you are going to find a 2.7 Carerra box, maybe....

Glad to see you got the trans from Samba. That is the one I ask Jake about for my Ghia. Like I said earlier, he told me about the 'one off' bearings used for this trans and that is why I decided not to pursue this one.

Glad to see that your trans specialist said it was ok.

BTW, I am going with the Rancho Trans with the gear ratios and Quaife.:D !!! Expensive, but not as much as when you mention the 'P' word!!!

Was the "one off" bearing Jake mentioned the throwout?
I noticed that the 923 has it's own throwout, unfortunately.
$245 list price....

Not sure which bearing Jake was talking about. He would be able to help...give him a PM or email.
