rear suspension bushes

hey, whats the best make poly bushes? i'm fed up of them wearing out very quickly, am i better off using rubber? i'm really tempted to convert to coil overs just to get decent mounting. this is a fast road car, lill less than 200bhp and all the one's i've had are crap. is there an alterative? saw on here brass bushes once, anyone know anything about them? cheers

They make bronze and plastic ones for 944's. I bought some bushings for 944 and VW they measured the same. Pelican parts sells some of the bronze and plastic one's. Look half way down the page of this link, and you will see some "poly bronze" bushings. (they ain't cheap)

i see there's a difference between pre and post 78 models. i have saw adjustable spring plates fitted and they 1 7/8" outer and 2" inner so prob no good to me, expensive too. wonder if i can replace the outer bush with a spherical bearing? maybe a bit harsh thou, but thats what most coilover conversions use.

wrenchnride247 January 13th 2008 22:01

Yep, I told you they are not cheap. For a street car they would transfer alot of noise through the body, but some may not mind the extra noise.

You might get some info from this company;

Looked at some other sites like prothane and energy suspension, but they don't list "air cooled" VW's.

well ordered up another set to go in. gonna see if i can cut a slice off of the old ones to pack it out a bit more to tighten it up. like an extra washer.

poo picture but can just make out the spring plate tube is rubbing on the torsion cover plate. both sides the same:angry:

The best solution by far are these bearing ones, especially made for beetles:

The ones on the left.

just been on the gwd web site, and can't find any bits think they must be updating web site. would you know how much they are and if they ship to the uk?

Wally January 18th 2008 14:04

They are at the 'news' section, way down that page, but its not bothersome to scroll down there

They are about 250 euros IIRC. I am sure he speaks english, at least he did at EBI.

1303R January 18th 2008 17:25

cheers, nothing in the products section. should ave looked about a bit more. 250 euros don't sound to bad, thanks for the input :)

can the gwd torsion bearing be used with a 944 spring plate? and when converting to rear coilovers and getting rid of the torsion bars can this be used instead of a uniball system or a hiem joint?

Wally March 6th 2008 11:36

Good question (for Gerd?) as I would like to know that as well and particularly for the spring plates of the 944 alu trailing arms (if they are different).

John

I have them but it won't be for a couple of weeks before I can let you know..
If you have the outside diameter of outboard side, then that would help.. as I have the parts down stairs in my basement some where.. and would spread things up..

Let me know and I will try to help

Bug@5speed(US) March 8th 2008 22:36

Weather permitting I will also at my end..

I have a tent outside that my bug is in, and I am not sure if it will make it through the night :(

Wish me luck, its windy..
