I looked into it for my bay (now sold it!) and decided that I would use the T2 rear hub, machine it so the 944 rear disk would fit on top, redrill the hub for Porsche stud pattern and push the studs...

Just to add to it... the output shafts on all of these gearboxes I have found to be interchangable... e.g...you can use T2/944 size output shafts from the 915 in your 901.

Yes it'll work but you need to weld in strengthening metal and strut inner wings to the bug.
The rear mountings on the chassis are different so you need ot drill out the spot welds on the rear...
