They have a way cool article on an A-arm set up for the Ball joint beam beetle. It comes with a rack & pinion set up. Maybe this will work for you.

I'm a copmuter geek as well. But I did a complete install of this kit in about 6 hours. It all works but have an issue with getting the hi/lo dimmer to work. But I would recommend the kit to anyone
