I've never had to use spacers. I have Berg 42's on a T1 and 3.
I do have a buddy who had this problem on a 914-2056cc and it was right from start-up, can't get any colder then that. He drilled a hole in the butterfly and it cured the problem. I don't think I would fix it that way, but it worked for him.
