The 2.7 liter had an overheating problem since Porsche bored the cylinders bigger and didn't increase the size of the piston oil squirters. This is only what I have read on a few 911 websites. When I was looking for an older 911 to buy I kept my search limited to 1982 and newer. The 3.2 liter (210hp) engine was the first one with hydraulic cam chain tensioners which are better than the spring loaded units of the earlier years. If you are just looking for more power you might want to consider the Subaru SVX flat six. They are right around 200hp and they are supposed to be very reliable, if you don't mind the radiator.
