A good used 2.4 or 2.7 can be had for under 2k. If you look for a 2.7, find one that has been rebuilt already and had the head studs timecerted in the case. A good running 3.0 can be had for 3-4k, check that the head studs have been replaced with steel ones and the dilivar studs thrown out, they are prone to corrosion and breakage.

Many of these engines are available as the early and mid year 911 guys are upgrading to 3.2's and 3.6's.

Also expect to pay 1k for a good 915 transmission, double that if you find one with a 7:31 ring and pinion.

Part prices aren't as bad as people think if you know where to look and can do your own work. BTW, plug wires are only 189 and alt's 250.

If you don't do your own engine work, look at a scooby conversion, its been done many times very well and is probably half the cost. I would think that the scooby conversion is more comon these days also.
