Upgrade brakes. Cost is the limiting factor here, but 944 seems to be the way to go, though you'll have to run Porsche bolt pattern. There is a lot of info on how to do front and rear brake upgrades on this forum, and also all the different ways to do if from mild to wild, so just do some searching.
Depending on how big of wheels you want to run and how low you want to go, you may or may not need dropped spindles, but an adjustable front beam is always good.
How much time and money are you going to spend on this thing? What do you want it to look like? Regular black undercoating, or DasDubber?
Either way, having a rolling chassis to work on makes EVERYTHING a lot easier, and you should be able to get a good one really cheap. Just make sure the front end is not bent at all from an accident.
